NFL Draft: 3 Reasons Why Marlon Humphrey Makes Sense
#2 – Jimmy Smith can’t stay healthy
When healthy, Jimmy Smith can be a shutdown corner. The problem is, in his six-year career, he has played in 16 games just twice, suffering season-ending injuries twice.
Smith has had a history of ankle/foot injuries, the most recent being a high ankle sprain in week 14 of the 2016 season. He also had some issues with his back last season.
When Smith is not in games, bad things happen to the Ravens. In 2014, Smith missed Baltimore’s playoff run. In the divisional game against the Patriots, Tom Brady and the New England offense overcame two separate 14-point deficits, much in part to the Ravens’ depleted secondary without Smith.
When Smith was not present last season, receivers like Odell Beckham Jr., Dez Bryant, and Chris Hogan torched the Ravens’ secondary. These plays changed games and put the Ravens in a hole. It is clear that the Ravens are tired of losing big games because of their secondary, and to fix that, they need leverage in-case Smith goes down with yet another injury.
