According to reports, Kenneth Dixon will miss the entire 2017 season.

The Baltimore Ravens got some bad news today. Kenneth Dixon will miss the entire 2017 season. Ian Rapoport, who originally reported the injury could have a much less consequential outcome, broke the news of Dixon’s lengthy recovery.

When last season ended Dixon was one of the real reasons for optimism. Dixon showed himself to be an exciting weapon for the Ravens offense. With the Ravens focus supposedly shifting to the running game, you had to figure that Dixon would have a huge sophomore season. Not long into the offseason, we learned that Dixon would miss the first quarter of the season due to a suspension. Today Ravens fans had there tempered hopes for the young running back crushed.

The Ravens are left with Terrance West, Danny Woodhead, Bobby Rainey and Buck Allen in their running back group. Lorenzo Taliaferro is expected to compete for the job at fullback. Woodhead, and Allen are best when catching footballs out of the backfield. Rainey has had a rather uneventful career, though he has had some highlight moments. When the season begins, there is little doubt that West will be the main back. He will do the running in between the tackles.

The Bottom Line:

The Baltimore Ravens brought in Greg Roman this offseason. The running game has been the talk all offseason long. This injury doesn’t help the Ravens get back to dominating on the ground. The combination of West and Dixon was a promising one. Sprinkling in Woodhead, especially on passing plays was going to give the Ravens a perfect trio. Now the running back position is wide open. Unless the Ravens add another player to the mix, there are a lot of touches up for grabs.

The Ravens still have to get back to running the football. They cannot use this as an excuse not to get the ground game going. Hopefully, Terrance West can have a breakout season. The talent is clearly there, now we need to see the results. We don’t know how things will shake up in the backfield, but we know Dixon will be missing in action.
