Baltimore Ravens roster battle: Fullback
By Joe Schiller
Ricky Ortiz
The Ravens brought in a talented undrafted rookie class and Ricky Ortiz was labeled as one of those players. The Oregon State product was a Kyle Juszczyk like player in college. He was saw time at fullback, special teams and even on defense.
We’ve seen Ortiz sparingly this preseason. However, his two carries were both on fourth down and resulted in first downs. He’s gotten the job done when the Ravens have given him the opportunity, which is something to give him credit for. While there’s still a lot more to be seen, I do like what Ortiz brings. He’s young, athletic and is someone who the Ravens could mold into the kind of fullback they want. With Taliaferro, you generally know what you are going to get with him. Plus like I mentioned, the injury concern is there.
Like Taliaferro, Ortiz is another player who can make his way on to the 53-man roster with his special team play, but the Ravens are going to want to see more out of him as a fullback. If they decide not to keep Ortiz on the active roster for the start of the season, I could see him as a practice squad player who is moved up if there are problems at the position during the season.
