Pat Ricard

Who would have thought Pat Ricard would be an option at fullback? The undrafted defensive lineman has been one of the standout rookies to far this offseason. He’s been taking reps at fullback in practice and saw game action against the Dolphins. He was not just another body on the field, he blocked well and people took notice. The Ravens also used him in the jumbo package on the goal line.

Ricard’s play of the night came on a great block that lead the way for a 16-yard gain by Buck Allen. When you watch the play, Ricard completely demolishes the linebacker.

Ricard sure has the frame for the position. At 6-3, 300 pounds he is a bulldozer leading the way for the run game. I’m not sure how he is handling carries, but his blocking was impressive to watch on Thursday night.

It’s possible the Ravens may not be too confident in Taliaferro or Ortiz at fullback. They wouldn’t be giving Ricard valuable snaps for nothing. He could very well be working his way into serious competition for the spot. It’s early, but you can’t count him out. The move would make sense for Ricard. With such a deep defensive line, it’s going to be tough for him to find time in the rotation.

Wherever he ends up playing, Ricard is certainly helping his chances at making it on to the 53-man roster this season.
