3. Bobby Rainey:

Staying in the backfield, let’s take a look at Bobby Rainey. Rainey isn’t going to make the team and it’s not entirely his fault. The running back competition is fierce. Taquan Mizzell has been the most impressive rookie for the offense, and he may not even make the team. Rainey was brought in when Kenneth Dixon went down for the year with injury. There was no promise then that he would make the team.

At this point it looks entirely unlikely that he would make the team. Rainey is actually doing a good job when he’s called upon. He has averaged 4.1 yards per rushing attempt, which isn’t bad. The Ravens just don’t need him. Doing a good job isn’t enough when you have to get past the competition. The Ravens don’t need Rainey. With the injury to Danny Woodhead, Rainey would have had a shot if Mizzell didn’t exceed expectation. He isn’t going to make the team as a kick returner either.

Rainey has bounced around the NFL, so he knows how things go. Rainey has played in the NFL for six seasons and he has just 1,053 yards on the ground. That’s what a decent running back puts up in a season. Rainey is who he is. He is a complementary back and the Ravens have enough of those.
