1. Building the 2000 defense:

The 2000 Ravens defense won Super Bowl XXXV with defense. They didn’t just win it with a good defense. They won it with a great defense. Newsome drafted Ray Lewis, Peter Boulware, Duane Starks, Chris McAlister, Jamie Sharper and Kim Herring. In the years leading up to the Ravens’ first championship. Newsome drafted six of the 11 starters of the historic, Super Bowl defense. Newsome signed Rob Burnett in 1996. He brought in Michael McCrary and Tony Siragusa in 1997. He brought in Rod Woodson in 1998 and he finished it off by signing Sam Adams in 2000.

The Ravens have the biggest 4-3 defensive line that I have ever seen. Adams and Siragusa were mammoth tackles. McCrary and Burnett set the edge and were pretty good pass rushers. Boulware, Lewis and Sharper made the league’s most athletic linebacker trio. Duane Starks and Chris McAlister were an epic duo. The results of this great talent coming together was a record for the fewest points allowed in a 16 game season. The Ravens throttled the Giants in the Super Bowl, who had an offense that was supposed to be unstoppable.

The Ravens first Super Bowl was a result of some special work done by Newsome. It was the end result of great drafting and key free agents being added to the puzzle. When everything is in the books, the construction of the 2000 Ravens defense will be the accomplishment that stands out the most on Newsome’s resume. Whether you’re frustrated or not, give Newsome a round of applause. He built a lot of winning football for the purple and black.
