Robert Griffin III is the newest Raven. Let’s not get to worked up about this one either way:
The fact here is that the Ravens signed a backup quarterback to a small contract with almost no risk. The fact here is that this doesn’t mean much unless Joe Flacco gets injured. To add on to the list of things that have to be said before diving into opinions, there is absolutely no promise that Griffin III will be the backup to Joe Flacco next season. The purple and black could draft a quarterback later this month. Now that we have this out of the way, it’s time to get into the opinions.
I find this move laughable, but I’m also having a hard time getting worked up about it. The reason I find it so out of left field is because Griffin III isn’t even the best option that is available. Anybody who wants to tell you that RGIII is better than Colin Kaepernick is taking a stand (see what I did there) that they can’t really defend on a football basis. The Ravens made it pretty clear that they weren’t going down that road, so it’s painfully obvious but also a moot point.
The reason I can’t seem to care one way or another is that this isn’t a big deal. Before this move the Ravens were going to be in trouble if Flacco went down and after this move they would be in the same boat. Ryan Mallett is a free agent and he’s given Ozzie Newsome no reason to keep him around. Griffin III can’t be worse than Mallett, can he? The Ravens signing a backup quarterback isn’t weird, it’s something they had to do.

Getting upset about this move is like getting upset because you woke up on the wrong side of the bed. While it’s a little weird to be sleeping in the opposite direction as you’re used to, does it really matter? If you get upset about this, you get upset about everything. I do have a confession to make though. At first I couldn’t stand this signing. I’ve calmed down about it, but it’s not like I’m on board with it. The Ravens just signed an objectively bad quarterback out of nowhere.

So go ahead and have your first reaction. I don’t think this is the kind of move that will generate a ton of happy thoughts. After you sit back and think about it though, is it worth getting upset about? I don’t think so.
