Watching the game against the Browns was one thing for all Ravens fans: Frustrating. The main frustration was due to the Ravens inability to convert on Third Down. Coming into Week 5, the Ravens were actually near the tops of the league in terms of Third Down Conversions. However, their performance last Sunday didn’t indicate that at all.
Baltimore went just 4-16 on third down against Cleveland and it was the main reason for their loss – the inability to sustain drives. That can’t be the case if the Ravens want to move to 4-2 on Sunday. Being efficient on 3rd Down often means being in 3rd & Short situations, which directly correlates to getting the run game going early on.
Marty Mornhinweg has done a great job calling plays and keeping things creative, but it’s up to the players on the field to make plays. The Ravens can’t afford to have penalties, dropped balls, or a lack of protection from the Offensive Line against one of the top defenses in the NFL. Converting on Third Down is huge and the play-maker outside, Michael Crabtree especially, need to step up and convert.
