What if the Pittsburgh Steelers intend on getting into the C.J. Mosley sweepstakes:

The Baltimore Ravens want to keep C.J. Mosley but what if they weren’t the only AFC North team eyeing him in free agency? The Pittsburgh Steelers are very familiar with Mosley, who has played against them twice a year since 2014. Curt Popejoy of Steelers Wire from USA Today, listed inside linebacker as the top NFL Draft need of the Steelers in a recent article.

In the Steelers Wire article, Popejoy said this:

"“Pittsburgh is still looking for the player who gave them what Ryan Shazier did. Taking nothing away from the effort of guys like Jon Bostic and Vince Williams, a shot of athleticism at the position is needed.”"

While the article was more focused on NFL Draft targets for Pittsburgh, they could address this need in free agency. The Steelers lost one of the most athletic linebackers in the league in Ryan Shazier. Mosley is a similar linebacker and he is a good leader.

There has been a lot of debate about what the Ravens should offer Mosley, but what isn’t a question is that Mosley is the top linebacker that could be available. The Steelers had the sixth best defense in the NFL last season. They have most of the pieces they need to be a good defensive team in 2019 and Mosley could take something good and make it great.

This past week, Good Morning Football discussed the idea of the Ravens going after Le’Veon Bell, but Mosley to the Steelers makes even more sense. Just because players don’t typically cross enemy lines in this AFC North rivalry, doesn’t mean it can’t happen. It makes too much sense for the Steelers not to think about it, should Mosley become available.

If the Steelers were to make this move it would be a devastating blow to the Ravens Flock. It would mean losing a four time Pro Bowl linebacker and a former 1st round pick to their top rival. The Ravens would lose the leader of the number one defense in the NFL, and the Steelers defense would get a big piece to the puzzle. It would be a nightmare for Eric DeCosta in his first year as the general manager of the Ravens, especially because bringing Mosley back is a stated goal of his.

The only thing that would hold the Steelers back from going after Mosley is their salary cap situation. That’s because going after Mosley is a win-win for the Steelers. They either get a really good linebacker or they run the price up for the Ravens to bring him back. Who knows what Kevin Colbert and the Steelers are planning, but going after Mosley would make a lot of sense. It is surely something Baltimore does not want to see.
