The Oakland Raiders released Seth Roberts after adding to their receiving corps this offseason. Roberts in the newest Ravens receiver and it’s a low key good move.

The Baltimore Ravens were short of wide receivers with meaningful experience in the league, so Seth Roberts was an under the radar signing that works. Roberts is a 6’2″ wide receiver who does his best work out of the slot and was a solid role player for the Raiders.

Roberts is coming off a 45 catch season where he had 494 yards and two touchdowns. He has the ability to make his receptions count. In four years in the NFL he has 25 receptions that went over 20 yards and three that were over 40 yards. He has 158 career receptions in 62 games.

He’s not a superstar and he doesn’t fix the Ravens receiving woes. It also doesn’t hurt, and it doesn’t cost much. Roberts was released by the Raiders so it doesn’t even lose Baltimore a compensatory pick. There’s nothing not to like about this move. The Ravens needed to add more than one receiver one way or another. The NFL Draft is a chance for the Ravens to add a young star, but this move was a chance to add a fairly reliable option to the mix.

Roberts has had some problems with drops in his career, but it’s nothing egregious. Roberts hasn’t had the chance to be more than a 40 something catch receiver. With a wide receiver group that is going to be fairly inexperienced, Roberts could have a chance to grow into something more. At the very least the Ravens have signed a player whose done positive things at the receiver position for the last four seasons.

Moves made in April, before the draft are seldom exciting but when done right they are incredible functional. This was a good signing for the purple and black. One thing that works about this signing is that Roberts is thought of as a scrappy receiver who is willing to block. He will fit right into the Ravens offense which wants that skill in receivers more than any other team in the league.

At the moment the Ravens have three wide receivers who have registered receptions in the NFL and Roberts is one of them. The Ravens still need to draft a receiver. There still is a chance for Chris Moore to step up his production. This doesn’t reshape the entire conversation at wide receiver but it does make it a bit more of an optimistic one.
