We haven’t seen the best of the 2019 Baltimore Ravens yet

The Baltimore Ravens are 5-2 and have a commanding lead in the AFC North. That being said, we haven’t seen the best of the purple and black yet:

The Baltimore Ravens are almost half way through the season and while they are impressive, they haven’t played their best football yet. The Ravens haven’t been at full strength yet this season. Their injuries in the secondary have hurt them. Marquise Brown has missed the last two games and that hasn’t helped the offense. Things are starting to click as evidenced by their 30-16 win against the Seattle Seahawks. That’s the point I am here to make however, things are just starting to come together for Baltimore.

The Marcus Peters trade balanced things out for the Ravens defensive woes and fortune scale. The injuries in the secondary were mostly offset by the move and it allowed the defense to play differently. Don “Wink” Martindale was able to call the game he always intended to. The defense clamped down on receivers and Martindale made sure there was some organized chaos going on in the defensive front. The Peters trade made things possible that weren’t even in play in the weeks before.

The Ravens should get Jimmy Smith back for the New England Patriots game. Smith has returned to practice and the Ravens bye week gives him the perfect chance to get ready to come back for a big game. If you thought the addition of Peters was a game changer, just imagine what can happen when Smith is inserted into the lineup. The Ravens would then have three cornerbacks (Peters, Smith and the elite Marlon Humphrey) that can make life difficult for wide receivers.

Another player the Ravens are expecting to be back on the field for the Patriots game, is Marquise Brown. Brown gives the Ravens speed at the wide receiver position that can’t be emulated by Chris Moore or Seth Roberts. Brown is a game changing receiver. The defense always has to be worried about him getting in the open field or even worse for them, past their entire secondary.

The Ravens passing numbers go as Brown and Mark Andrews go. Against the Seahawks, Andrews had a bad game. Andrews has been a top-tier tight end this season and at times he has looked like the best in the game. If Andrews can get back to his stellar level of play, and Brown can come back and light teams up, the Ravens passing attack will be deadly.

The Ravens got their wake up call against the Cleveland Browns. They didn’t completely work out the kinks by the time they played the Steelers; however it was good enough and a tough win in Pittsburgh was a real turning point for them. The Ravens have won three straight games. Since the debacle against the Browns, the Ravens have gotten better each and every week.

The Ravens haven’t played a game yet this season where everything was rolling (other than the season opener against the Dolphins). A little thing here, a little thing there, has been holding this team back. The Ravens have a chance to get things on a real roll after the bye week. This isn’t the dominant team they could end up being. Not yet. A 5-2 record is a masterpiece of coaching by John Harbaugh. This could be the beginning of a special run for the purple and black.
