LSU’s defense had a lot of stars littered throughout in 2019. At the head of it was linebacker Patrick Queen, who should be on the Baltimore Ravens radar.

Breakdown:

No one made themselves more money in the final month of the college football season than LSU linebacker Patrick Queen. Queen captained a defense that stifled opposing offenses and flew around the field and made plays. He went from not starting to begin the season to a virtual first-round lock.

Queen in the yang to Kenneth Murray’s ying in that he is dominant in pass coverage in comparison to Murray’s dominance against the run. Queen is just as good at tracking the ball, however, and is consistently wherever the ball ends up. Simply put, Queen looks the part of the modern linebacker and is a top-end linebacker prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Notable stats for Patrick Queen (full stats here) 2017-2019:

Strengths:

More from Ebony Bird

  • Unbelievably fast (ran a 4.50 40-yard dash) and it shows on tape; consistently tracks down the ball carrier
  • Looks like an athlete, plays like an athlete
  • Plays to the level of his competition in that he brings his A-game vs. top opponents
  • Football I.Q. off the charts; at times looks like he knows the play before it starts
  • Top-tier pass coverage linebacker
  • Silky smooth hips allow him to flip and track; looks like a defensive back

Weaknesses:

  • On the smaller side at 6’0″ 229-lbs.
  • One year starter that came on hot to end the season
  • Not the strongest tackler; needs to finish
  • Struggles to shed blocks and gets washed in the trash

Fit with the Ravens:

The Baltimore Ravens could use some help in their pass coverage in the front-seven and Patrick Queen gives them that. Queen is unlike what Ravens linebackers have offered over the last few years and plays like a defensive back. Queen is fluid and can mirror and match whatever he’s up against. His zone coverage is also top-notch.

In the run game, Queen will benefit from having big bodies in front of him to keep him clean and fly around the field. This is something that Queen benefited from at LSU and having it stay that way at the next level will only help him excel from day one.

The one thing to consider here is Patrick Queen’s size may not mesh well with this defense. There are times where he gets washed up and that’s not what the Baltimore Ravens are looking for. Still, Queen would be a starter immediately for the team and make the front-seven an elite unit. A student of the game, Queen will be an instant sparkplug for the defense.
