Baltimore Ravens scouting reports: Alton Robinson has high-upside
There’s some intriguing day three edge rushers in the 2020 NFL Draft like Syracuse’s Alton Robinson. He could draw the interest of the Baltimore Ravens.
Breakdown:
Syracuse has put in a couple of stud pass rushers into the NFL before, most notably Chandler Jones, and now they have another intriguing and high-upside3 guy in Alton Robinson. Robinson has the ideal body type you look for in an edge rusher with production to match. His combination of athleticism and technique has us believing he could blossom into something special.
Robinson was downright dominant as a junior for the Orange and garnered some pretty serious hype prior to the 2019 season. An underwhelming senior year, however, stunted his stock and Robinson appears to be a day three pick now.
Notable stats for Alton Robinson (full stats here) 2017-2019:

- 19 career sacks (10 in 2018)
- 32 career TFLs (17 in 2018)
- Five career forced fumbles (three in 2018)
Positives:
- Prototypical size at 6’3″ 264-lbs.
- A high-ceiling player who can become a top-end edge rusher early in his career
- Quick feet that are constantly moving
- Has great speed off the edge; first-step quickness is enticing
- Has the strength to develop a nasty bull-rush, but already uses it to move tackles off their spot
- Uses length to keep his chest clean
- Opportunistic edge rusher that can force strip-sacks
Negatives:
- Was charged with second-degree robbery in 2015, but the case was eventually dismissed
- Production was stunted between junior and senior seasons; didn’t take the next step and remains a raw prospect
- Upright rusher without good bend to his pass rush
- Needs to add more tools to his pass rush arsenal to disengage quicker
- Needs to convert speed to power more consistently; typically using one or the other
- Work to be done as a run defender/edge setter
Fit with the Ravens:
Alton Robinson would be a situational pass rusher for the Baltimore Ravens. Robinson’s reliance on brute strength to overwhelm his opposition without combining it with his speed consistently will not translate well initially.
Baltimore, ideally, would draft Robinson on day three and stash him away behind Matt Judon and co. The Ravens will look to add pass-rushing help earlier in the draft, so Robinson would likely be a second or third addition to the defense.
The bright side with Alton Robinson is he has the upside to turn into a double-digit sack player. If he can convert speed to power and add a move-or-two to his pass rush moves, the kid could be worth his weight in gold. The Baltimore Ravens have a good track record when it comes to developing edge rushers, so this pick could come back to benefit the team down the road.
