With a spot open at right guard and a swing tackle needed, incoming rookie Tyre Phillips could play a very important role for the Baltimore Ravens o-line.

The Baltimore Ravens offensive line is a very good unit. Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown Jr. give the team bookend Pro Bowl tackles, while the interior of the line has some high-quality guys like Bradley Bozeman and Matt Skura. While the loss of Marshal Yanda will certainly hurt, there are plenty of guys who could help replace him. One of the best options the Ravens have is incoming rookie Tyre Phillips.

Phillips spent his college career at Mississippi State, where he played tackle for the Bulldogs for four seasons. Phillips has terrific length and size (6’5″ 342-lbs.) to profile as a starting tackle, but he might project better at guard at the professional level.

For the Baltimore Ravens, the team has the perfect role in store for him.

For starters, Tyre Phillips could very well be the guy at right guard for the team. His massive size would team up next to Brown Jr. on the right side to give the Ravens two massive bodies to run behind. He definitely has the most strength of any options the team could throw on the right side.

Second-year man Ben Powers will make a run for the right guard spot, as will fellow 2020 NFL Draft pick, Ben Bredeson. But like I already mentioned, neither of them has the size profile or brute strength that Tyre Phillips has. If Baltimore wants the best run-blocking option starting there, then their guy should be Phillips.

Even if Phillips weren’t to win the starting right guard spot, there remains another spot that is just as valuable to the team: the swing tackle gig. The Ravens absolutely love to role out with three tight ends or three offensive tackles for their power run game. For many years, James Hurst held down the swing tackle gig for the team before he was cut this offseason following a suspension for PEDs.

Initially, veteran Andre Smith was pegged to be the top candidate to be the team’s swing tackle before he opted out of the 2020 season. With the swing tackle spot now wide open, Tyre Phillips should be considered the runaway favorite for the spot. Phillips is simply the next-best option the team has at tackle and profiles perfectly as the sixth-man for the offensive line. It was a role he was born to play.

All in all, Tyre Phillips looks to have a significant role to play for the Baltimore Ravens in 2020. Phillips could wind up starting day one at right guard for the team, but at a minimum, it’s likely he’ll be Baltimore’s top swing tackle option. Whatever it may be, get used to seeing Tyre Phillips on the field for the Ravens.
