It may have been a disappointing season considering the expectations for Marquise Brown, he’s starting to get hot for the Baltimore Ravens now.

When you have the nickname “Hollywood” you are expected to be a star. That was the case for Marquise Brown when he came out of Oklahoma a year ago. The Baltimore Ravens made Brown their first pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and the first wide receiver off the board with the thought that he could be the star receiver the franchise had yet to find in its 25-years of existence. Up until recently, Brown has only flashed that potential in a very frustrating manner.

Brown placed a massive amount of pressure on his shoulders when he tweeted out in November “what’s the point of having souljas if you never use them”, essentially calling out the Ravens offensive scheme and begging for touches. Instead of showing out when given more opportunities, Brown continued to underperform and underwhelm us all. It began to look certain that Brown was on his way to the dreaded “bust” label that so many Baltimore receivers before him had earned.

That was true up until the last month of the season. Now, Marquise Brown is playing hot and reclaiming his nickname “Hollywood.” To the surprise of no one, he has helped the Ravens in vying for a playoff spot.

Baltimore is 3-0 in their last three games and Marquise Brown has been going off. Brown has 187-yards in that time span and two touchdowns, including the show-stopping 44-yard bomb on fourth down vs. the Cleveland Browns. Brown also tallied 85 more yards and a 70-yard touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers with Robert Griffin III and Trace McSorley throwing him the ball.

Marquise Brown has simply looked the part over the last month and it’s exactly what Baltimore needs right now. With few receivers showing the worth for one of the league’s most underwhelming passing offenses, someone needed to step up. That player has been Marquise Brown.

It’s exactly what the Ravens need right now. While Baltimore’s offense is entirely predicated on how well it runs the football, it nonetheless needs pass-catching options to remain somewhat balanced and at least keep defenses honest. With Mark Andrews back in the folds the offense has a red-zone and middle of the field option. With the way “Hollywood” Brown is playing, the rest of the field is now wide open.

Brown is still far from perfect, as he has been plagued with drop issues. But when he’s on he’s as good as any deep threat in the league. We saw numerous times last season the potential that he has and he’s once again showing it this year. The difference between then and now is that “Hollywood” is stringing it together over consecutive weeks. It’s just what the doctor ordered.
