The Baltimore Ravens traded one of their former first-round picks, outside linebacker Odafe Oweh, earlier in October. To most, the deal told the story of a team parting ways with a disappointing draft pick. In reality, it was a move that has transformed Baltimore's defense and may ultimately save their season.
In the deal, the Ravens received the better end of a pick swap, but the return of safety Alohi Gilman flew under the radar. In his third game with the team, it is paying off more than anyone could have imagined.
Gilman’s arrival has allowed star safety Kyle Hamilton to showcase his elite versatility. He lines up pretty much everywhere, especially making an impact closer to the line of scrimmage. Gilman brings Baltimore a whole lot more versatility in the secondary and has provided stable play next to rookie Malaki Starks so far.
Alohi Gilman quickly makes major impact in Week 9
Gilman made his name known on Thursday against the Miami Dolphins. Through one quarter, he quickly racked up three tackles and made a game-changing play. After punter Jordan Stout pinned Miami deep in their own end, Gilman stripped the ball from Dolphins wide receiver Tahj Washington just two plays later. He recovered his own forced fumble, returning the ball inside the 10.
The Ravens scored a touchdown on the ensuing drive by way of a pass to tight end Mark Andrews.
Gilman’s presence also allowed Hamilton to make some big-time plays in the first quarter of Week 9. He had two tackles of his own, one of which was a tackle for loss where he brought down running back De’Von Achane three yards in the backfield. The Dolphins would threaten on that drive, but kicker Riley Patterson ultimately missed a 35-yard field goal.
This stellar opening quarter from the Ravens’ defense comes after back-to-back strong performances. They held the Los Angeles Rams to 17 points in a Week 6 loss and shut down the Chicago Bears in a 30-16 win in Week 8.
While the trade for Gilman was not a blockbuster trade by any means, it is looking like one by the way the defense has played since the acquisition.
