The Baltimore Ravens are breathing a sigh of relief after seeing the news that the Cleveland Browns will be trading Myles Garrett. Garrett’s the best pass rusher in the league, and it’s not particularly close. Thankfully, he’ll now be headed west to suit up for the Los Angeles Rams.
Garrett is as good as he’s ever been. He just set the NFL record with 23 sacks in his 2025 campaign. 5.5 of those sacks came against the Ravens, which included an agonizing four sacks in one matchup in Week 11. Luckily, they won’t have to deal with him any longer.
Unfortunately, it’s not like the Browns are too much of a step back. Well, they are. They moved the best defender in the NFL. However, they got themselves an uber-talented pass rusher in return. Jared Verse is getting set to introduce himself to the AFC North.
Baltimore Ravens escape overwhelming Myles Garrett threat, but challenge arises
The Ravens are already familiar with Jared Verse. They faced him for the first time last year, and in that clash, he had one sack and a forced fumble. We know he’s an excellent football player and could develop into a premier one.
Verse is no Myles Garrett. Let’s get that straight. The highest sack total he’s had across his first two years as a pro is just 7.5. That doesn’t look too good on paper. He’s just 25 years old, though, and is already becoming one of the more feared pass rushers that this league has to offer.
Sure, Verse has 12 career sacks in 34 games, but the talent is there. There’s no denying it. He won the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year award and has already racked up two Pro Bowls. Yes, I understand Pro Bowl honors have become a bit of a joke over the years, but being named to the initial Pro Bowl roster is still nothing to scoff at. An incredibly bright future could be ahead for Verse.
And while those sack numbers don’t look great, they could quickly become elite. Verse is fifth in the league in QB pressures since he was drafted in 2024, and according to Pro Football Focus, he was sixth in pressures last season with 80. He also earned an 83.9 overall grade, per the site, which was 11th among edge rushers. Obviously, he doesn’t come close to Garrett, but those stats are certainly encouraging for the player that Verse could become.
The Florida State product is also very young. He is barely scratching the surface. For Cleveland, they’re taking a major gamble on those pressures turning into sacks as they look to replace Garrett.
So, although the Ravens should be elated to see the Myles Garrett-sized thorn in their side depart from the AFC, a new foe awaits them. The up-and-comer Verse could become dangerous, and with two, likely three years left on his rookie contract, he’ll be looking to make his presence felt year in and year out.
