As the Baltimore Ravens prepare for the 2026 campaign, they’re going to need a lot from their young players. Whether it’s offense or defense, those guys must make an impact if the team is going to turn things around and make the playoffs.
Most notably, the offensive line is running out a top rookie that fans are eager to see: Vega Ioane. The 2026 first-round pick could be the savior to Baltimore’s offensive guard woes, slotting in opposite veteran John Simpson. Simpson’s leadership could be crucial to Ioane’s early impact, but it sounds like Ioane is already acting like a veteran himself.
Through the offseason program, the compliments for Ioane’s ability and mentality have been endless. On an episode of The Lounge Podcast, the 22-year-old’s right-side running mate, Roger Rosengarten, was the latest to sing his praises.
"“[Ioane’s] come in, and you can already tell he’s got the veteran mentality … I couldn’t tell if he’s been in the league for five years or if this is his first year,” Rosengarten said. “Our communication has been the best it’s ever been … A player like [Ioane] and the mentality he has, it definitely makes my job a little bit easier.”"Roger Rosengarten
Clearly, Ioane is making the NFL leap look effortless.
Baltimore Ravens could get a boost from standout rookie earlier than expected
The NFL learning curve hits most rookies like a truck. There’s nothing that compares to the jump from college to the pros, and as a result, it can take a minute for even the best prospects to adjust to the life of an NFL player. Vega Ioane, though? He’s making that learning curve look invisible.
Obviously, the pads haven’t gone on yet, and live contact hasn’t been allowed through the offseason program. To be honest, we won’t truly learn about Ioane’s true ability until training camp hits. It’s a completely different ballgame when players are allowed to go at it in the trenches. However, so far, Ioane is checking every box.
From the mental side of things, to his preparation, to his technique, it sounds like there’s nothing you can’t love about the Penn State product. He’s blown pretty much everyone possible through his first couple of months as a professional football player. It’s incredibly impressive.
You can usually expect that from a guy who was selected 14th overall in the NFL Draft, but in the same breath, when coaches and teammates are slapping a rookie with the veteran label this early, it’s something to keep a close eye on. Ioane could really be an instant game-changer. And boy, Baltimore needs that on the interior offensive line.
The Ravens had endless issues at offensive guard last year, and while they’ve fixed that, the center position has become an even bigger problem. Ioane making a seamless transition to the NFL will be crucial in maximizing the protection for Lamar Jackson up front. He could even help hide some of the flaws that could appear at center. His ceiling is that high.
Again, we’ll have to wait and see how Ioane performs once training camp arrives, but everything he’s done up to this point suggests he can be elite. Those who labeled him as the best guard prospect since Quenton Nelson might quickly be proven right.
