Ravens can't afford to take the trade bait on AFC rival's buy-low trap

Despite the substantial upgrades made this offseason, the Baltimore Ravens could still use help. The bulk of the offseason is over, but the best teams never stop searching for upgrades, and the Ravens should remain active on the free agent and trade markets.

The most obvious area that still needs juice is the center spot. It’s looking like a scary unknown, and Eric DeCosta has noted the possibility of trading for one. However, what if they turn their attention to a different offensive position?

Could Baltimore target another wide receiver? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks so. In a recent article, ESPN analysts mocked trades for four trade candidates, and among those was Buffalo Bills wideout Keon Coleman. Fowler’s hypothetical deal has the Ravens sending a 2027 fifth-rounder to the Bills for Coleman.

Coleman is a low-risk move, but Baltimore can’t take the bait. It’s not worth it.

To Jeremy Fowler’s credit, it’s not a bad idea to give Lamar Jackson another weapon, especially given the lack of high-end talent in Baltimore’s wide receiver room. Shooting for the stars with a buy-low move could make some sense, and Fowler defends the idea pretty well. He wrote:

“Buffalo seems content with keeping Coleman, but Baltimore can jump into the fray to improve its thin receiver depth. Coleman's play style should fit with Lamar Jackson, as he's a big receiver with catch radius. This would also allow Buffalo to develop fourth-round rookie Skyler Bell for a sizable role in the offense.”

Sure, with Jackson’s improved ball placement over the years, acquiring a 6-foot-3 weapon with athleticism at the catch point could be a huge plus. It could create a dominant duo. However, in the same breath, Coleman has had a disappointing NFL career up to this point.

The Bills have added players like D.J. Moore and Skyler Bell to their wide receiver room for a reason. Dealing a fifth-round selection to an AFC rival for a largely unproven player wouldn’t be smart business, especially knowing Eric DeCosta’s love for draft picks.

In addition to all that, Baltimore could actually have a pretty good arsenal of weapons already set in stone at wideout. Well, emphasis on could. They used two valuable draft picks on that spot in the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Ravens selected Ja’Kobi Lane in the third round and Elijah Sarratt in the fourth round last month. Both have gotten a ton of praise early on, and they could have a realistic chance at getting serious starting reps in their rookie campaigns. Oh yeah, and they possess similiar traits to Keon Coleman as contested catch threats. Would possibly stunting their development to take a desperate swing on Coleman be worth it? Probably not.

Of course, Coleman could still be a good NFL player. And Ravens fans know all about the damage he can do when he’s at his best. He put up eight receptions for 112 yards and one touchdown in last year’s Week 1 clash against Baltimore. However, a lot of that was due to poor secondary play and defensive game-planning, and Coleman struggled to even come close to that production for the rest of 2025.

So yeah, Coleman still has time to develop, but after two disappointing seasons in Buffalo, he’s starting to fade. By the way the Bills’ offseason has gone, it looks like Coleman is becoming a bit of an afterthought, and the Ravens can’t afford to help an AFC rival out by trading for him.
