Ravens dark horse WR will hope third time's the charm to survive roster squeeze

Could he finally break onto the 53-man roster?

If the offseason made one thing clear, it’s that the Baltimore Ravens are determined to transform their wide receiver corps. Last season, they lacked depth. Shockingly, just one player even sniffed 500 receiving yards, that being Zay Flowers, who reached a career-high 1,211 yards.

This year, there's a good mix of returning weapons looking to make a statement and newcomers eager to prove themselves. The talent there isn’t necessarily deep, though. It’s an open competition; the kind of competition that Dayton Wade must take advantage of.

Wade has been an offseason darling ever since he was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss in 2024. He always shines in camp and preseason, but hasn’t had the fortune of breaking onto the active roster yet. This year, he’s making a name for himself again in OTAs, and he’ll hope his third chapter rewrites his fate.

Baltimore Ravens’ roster hopeful trying to make the most of another shot at his NFL dream

It should come as no shock at all to Ravens fans that Dayton Wade is once again popping up in offseason headlines. He’s become a consistent standout when it comes to pretty much any opportunity that comes before roster cuts. Week 2 of OTAs was no different, as he was one of the go-to targets for Lamar Jackson during last Wednesday’s practice.

To his credit, although Wade hasn’t made an active roster yet, he seems to make Baltimore’s job extremely difficult. It’s hard to miss him when camp comes about and the preseason lights go on.

In the preseason back in 2024, Wade caught seven passes for 99 yards and one touchdown. He was the Ravens’ second-leading receiver in those three contests, showcasing lightning-in-a-bottle ability with the ball in his hands.

During 2025’s preseason slate, he made another case for himself with five receptions for 60 yards. Those numbers were good for third on the team. However, a rib injury ended any shot he had at cracking the 53-man roster, as he was put on the shelf for the entirety of the season.

In 2026, he’s trying to make the most of a third opportunity to make the team. They say the third time is the charm, right? And if we see him put up similar performances, there might actually be a pathway for him to suit up in regular-season action.

Wade’s top competition this time around is once again LaJohntay Wester. Last year, Wester likely would’ve gotten the nod over him as a sixth-round rookie, regardless of Wade’s injury, but this time could be different.

Both standing at 5-foot-9 with punt returner potential, Wade vs. Wester is the obvious battle for the final roster spot at wide receiver. Sure, Wester’s gotten some praise and certainly has the upper hand, but the fact of the matter is, he may not have flashed enough to be guaranteed a spot heading into 2026. If Wade’s strong offseason run continues, with highlights as a receiving and special teams threat, then some tough conversations might have to be had in Charm City.

Overall, Wade is still a long shot to survive cutdown day on Aug. 30. The draft additions of Ja’Kobi Lane and Elijah Sarratt only made life tougher for him, and it’s unlikely that Baltimore gives up on Wester in favor of Wade. It’ll take an absolutely dominant preseason for Wade to find his way onto the team. It’s not impossible, though. The coming months will be very interesting.
