The Baltimore Ravens' Diego Pavia era was short-lived. As first reported by Ian Rapoport, the Ravens waived the former Heisman finalist to make room for center Ethan Pocic, six days before training camp.
With three quarterbacks competing for the Ravens' third-string job, Pavia, an undrafted free agent, faced an uphill battle to make Baltimore's roster, and he didn't even make it to training camp. Pavia's small stature and controversial personality added two more hurdles. In the end, cutting ties with him makes sense for these reasons.
Now, though, the Ravens can narrow down their third-string quarterback battle to Skyler Thompson and Joe Fagnano during training camp. Honestly, this isn't something fans will be zeroed in on. The Ravens already have a superstar in Lamar Jackson and a solid backup in Tyler Huntley.
It's also likely that either Thompson or Fagnano will simply end up on the practice squad.
The Baltimore Ravens' QB3 battle is something fans should keep an eye on
While Ravens fans might not be focused on this third string QB battle, but they should be familiar with the value of an emergency quarterback.
When the Ravens signed Tyler Huntley to the practice squad last August, they didn't expect him to play. Unfortunately, due to Jackson getting injured and Cooper Rush being a complete disaster, Huntley started a game in October. He later took over for Huntley in a December game against the New England Patriots when Lamar got injured again, and he started the following week against the Green Bay Packers.
As such, this battle between Thompson and Fagnano isn't entirely nothing.
Thompson has started three games since 2022 -- all with the Miami Dolphins. For his career, though, Thompson has completed below 60 percent of his passes and has three interceptions to just one touchdown. As you can see, his stats are pretty rough, but having a third-string QB who at least has some experience (including a playoff start) could be seen as a plus, and this could give Thompson a leg up in the QB3 battle.
On the flip side, the Ravens could roll the dice on Fagnano, who was an undrafted free agent. Fagnano threw for 3,448 yards and 28 touchdowns at UConn last year. It's also worth noting that Fagnano transformed the Huskies into a solid program that won nine games in back-to-back seasons.
If the Ravens want a little more long-term upside from their third-string QB, then Fagnano could get the job. Whether the Ravens want some experience or youth from their emergency quarterback, they'll have plenty of time to decide in training camp and preseason.
Without a doubt, this is an under-the-radar battle that fans shouldn't totally forget about, and waiving Pavia narrows it down and raises the stakes slightly.
