It may be safe to say the Baltimore Ravens’ decision to back out of the Maxx Crosby deal is one of the craziest moves the NFL has ever seen. The Ravens had themselves an elite pass rusher, but opted to withdraw from the deal. With so much already happening in free agency, this could send shockwaves through the league.
The reported reason for Baltimore’s decision was Crosby’s medicals. He’s coming off a knee injury and underwent meniscus surgery. That’s a serious problem and takes a long-term recovery. As a result, the Ravens weren’t comfortable with making the deal.
That, of course, is what they’ll tell everybody. The fact of the matter is that’s what teams always say when they back out of a deal, and speculation always follows. This one is no different. Plenty of teams have questions about why general manager Eric DeCosta truly backed out of the deal.

Baltimore Ravens on the hot seat after questionable Maxx Crosby move
Baltimore’s decision to pull the rug out from under this trade is unfathomable. It’s shocked many front offices, and with free agent agreements being made, this will completely change how teams approach the open market when the new league year officially opens on Wednesday.
To some extent, the decision to back out is understandable. Sure, you landed a superstar in a blockbuster deal, but you also traded two first-round picks for him, and he’s coming off an injury. The Ravens have every right to ensure he’s 100 percent healthy before finalizing the trade. However, the timing of it all is very harsh on teams like the Las Vegas Raiders, who already have some big-time deals in place.
Crosby was also playing through that meniscus injury since Week 3. He finished the year with 10 sacks and 28 tackles for loss, and eight of those sacks came after the injury. Unless the doctors messed up a very common surgery for NFL players, then there’s reason for GM speculation on some shady business by Baltimore.
As a result of this, Baltimore will get the two first-rounders back. The Ravens are known for building through the draft, and trading one first-round pick for a veteran would’ve been a franchise-first, and they traded two. It was unfamiliar territory for the front office. They'll get the picks back, but at the cost of sending a whirlwind of rumors into the air and losing out on a game-changing player.
Ultimately, this puts Baltimore in an even worse place than where the team started before the trade. They are expected to lose key pieces in free agency, including outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones, so the overall depth of their roster looks a bit lackluster right now. All the while, it’s sent the rest of the NFL into a frenzy.
