Ravens' Jake Moody reunion puts Tyler Loop right back under the microscope

The pressure is mounting once again.

Just like that, he’s back. The Baltimore Ravens signed Jake Moody to their practice squad on Monday, marking his second stint with the team. The timing puts clear pressure back on Tyler Loop.

While Loop has taken strides in 2026, inconsistency still exists. In Baltimore’s Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns, he had his most costly miss of the year. He shanked a 49-yarder in the fourth quarter that would’ve pushed the lead to 10. Instead, the Ravens lost by three.

When you’ve had a shaky NFL career like Loop, your team seeking out competition shouldn’t come as a shock. He’s made some big kicks, but after Sunday, it looks like he's teetering on unstable ground once again.

Tyler Loop needs to be more consistent in the big moments. That’s the reason he finds himself back at square one. Many of his misses tend to come when the Ravens have a chance to put a crucial three points on the board. He’s had trouble answering that call.

Personally, I still have confidence in Loop. You can blame two of his misses on the whole special teams operation — his Week 2 miss was blocked and his Week 4 miss was partially due to a questionable hold. He’s also a perfect 5-for-5 from 50+ yards this year, including the 56-yard game-winner in Rio.

However, time is never guaranteed at kicker. The only scenario it’s granted is with proven veterans — Loop is far from that. He has a long road ahead, and it’s been one filled with turbulence.

And in his press conference on Monday, Jesse Minter was extremely critical of Loop’s Week 6 blunder.

“There’s kicks that take a lead from a two-score game to a three-score game [in Week 4], or take [Week 6] from a one-score game to a two-score game…those are critical misses,” Minter said. “There’s confidence in how he prepares…but at the same time that position is completely results-driven…We need to make second-half kicks. You could argue that second-half missed field goals are no different than turning the ball over.”

When you’re not making those kicks, you’re not a positive asset to your team. In fact, missed field goals can shift a game’s momentum, especially in close games, which has been the case with each of Loop’s misses this season.

Maybe bringing Jake Moody back is what Loop needs, though.

Jake Moody addition could be the best-case scenario for Tyler Loop

The last time around, this worked out pretty well for Tyler Loop.

The Ravens signed Jake Moody after Loop had a horrendous preseason. It paid off early on. The 25-year-old kicked extremely well heading into the regular season when Moody first joined the room. Jesse Minter’s confidence also never wavered.

Moody’s initial tenure ended after Loop went 2-for-2 in Week 1, knocking through 45- and 57-yard attempts.

In the first three weeks, Loop was 5-for-6, with the lone miss being a blocked kick where the protection completely broke down. Unfortunately, two misses in important situations over the last three weeks have put Moody right back on the practice squad.

Perhaps Loop is one of those guys who thrives when feeling the heat, though. It can be the ultimate motivator. Your focus can hit a new level when your job is on the line.

We’ll see if lightning can strike twice for Loop.
