The Baltimore Ravens’ roster looks a lot different right now. They’ve seen a complete revamp this offseason, and even after an impressive 2026 NFL Draft, they’re not done adding.

On Monday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Ravens are expected to sign veteran quarterback Skyler Thompson. Although they likely have their QB depth chart set with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, head coach Jesse Minter has said they’re looking to carry three to five quarterbacks this offseason. Thompson is number five.

For Diego Pavia, who was one of the most polarizing prospects in this year’s draft, this isn’t great news to hear. After being brought in for the rookie minicamp and eventually signing an offseason contract, Pavia was staring down an uphill climb, but also one that was completely feasible. However, the Thompson addition makes that road to a roster spot incredibly tough.

Diego Pavia gets harsh wake-up call after Baltimore Ravens’ Skyler Thompson signing

Pavia already had his back against the wall. As a 5-foot-10 quarterback, he has the odds stacked against him. However, before, it was him battling fellow undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano for the QB3 spot. Now, Thompson, who has plenty of experience, joins the competition. Beating out Thompson in camp isn’t going to be easy at all.

Thompson is coming to Charm City, entering his fifth NFL season. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, playing in 11 games and earning three starts for them (one of which was a playoff game). The 28-year-old also spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025.

Admittedly, Thompson hasn’t exactly been a good quarterback. In the regular season reps he’s gotten, he’s completed just 58.7% of his passes, throwing for one touchdown to two interceptions, and adding another touchdown on the ground. Still, experience is usually the winning trait when you’re building out your quarterback room. Thompson obviously has the edge on Pavia, as well as Fagnano, in that department.

Thompson also possesses enough athleticism under center. In 2025, Baltimore went with Cooper Rush (who is not much of an athlete) as their backup to start the year, and everyone knows how bad that went. Sure, Pavia is also athletic, but with Thompson pretty much matching him in that department, and then gaining the advantage with his 6-foot-2 frame and five years of pro experience, Pavia is being backed onto a roster bubble that could prove impossible to escape.

There’s certainly a world where Pavia could win a practice squad spot behind Jackson and Huntley, or even an active roster spot if the Ravens keep three quarterbacks. He’s got a competitive drive that very few can match, and the team is challenging him to showcase that. However, the fact of the matter is that the steep uphill roster climb is becoming a slippery slope that he could slide down.
