Ravens could flip the script on Chargers with sneaky free agency move

The Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers already have a semi-built-in rivalry, not just because of the Harbaugh brothers, but also because the Chargers seem to collect ex-Ravens like trading cards. This time, though, Baltimore might flip the script by poaching a defensive piece from Jim Harbaugh’s squad.

Could-be-former Chargers safety Elijah Molden is set to hit free agency, and while he’s not the biggest name on the market, he might be one of the best fits for what Baltimore is looking for.

Molden is coming off a strong season in Los Angeles, where he racked up 75 tackles, three interceptions, and seven passes defended before a broken fibula ended his year. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report believes Molden is overlooked and could be a low-risk, high-reward option for the Ravens this offseason, saying,

"Along with some impressive 2024 production, most teams should be interested in Molden's positional versatility, He has played cornerback, nickel and safety during his time with the Titans and Chargers. Yet, Molden may not have a strong financial market, possibly due to the injury. Molden's versatility would make him a terrific fit for the Baltimore Ravens, who benched Marcus Williams late in the 2024 season."

Elijah Molden might not be overlooked in Baltimore

The Ravens’ secondary struggled mightily before finally finding its groove later in the season. But adding Molden at a reasonable price (Spotrac projects him at $6.2 million annually) would give Baltimore even more flexibility on the back end. If Jim Harbaugh lets one of his overlooked playmakers walk, John and general manager Eric DeCosta should be the first in line to scoop him up.

Baltimore has been linked to several free-agent safeties this offseason, including Tre’von Moehrig, but Molden is the far more realistic option. Moehrig, at just 25, is likely looking for a much bigger and longer-termed contract, while Molden’s injury-shortened season might keep his price tag at a bargain level.

If the Ravens want to make a savvy addition without breaking the bank, Molden checks a lot of boxes.

The Ravens don’t necessarily need to go out and sign a superstar safety. They already have one in Hamilton, and Ar'Darius Washington stepped up in a big way last season. But Baltimore thrives when it has depth and versatility in its secondary, and Molden would bring both. His ability to play multiple positions means defensive coordinator Zach Orr and senior secondary coach Chuck Pagano could get creative with how he’s used.

If the Chargers don’t prioritize bringing Molden back, the Ravens could and should take full advantage. Not only would they be adding a talented, underrated piece to their defense, but they’d also be making sure Jim Harbaugh’s squad gets just a little bit weaker in the process.

Sounds like a win-win.
