The Baltimore Ravens’ 2026 offseason was franchise-altering. No matter what happened, they were bound to be a competitive team this season, but they’ve been taking small steps back for years. The arrival of head coach Jesse Minter and others should reroute them.
The defense especially needed help, and no area was in flux more than the defensive line. It was a complete disaster. Luckily, they got the revamp they needed.
Baltimore’s free agency class was headed by Trey Hendrickson and Calais Campbell. That’s two talented faces joining the defensive front—they’re nasty, game-wrecking forces. More importantly, though, they bring an ingredient the defense needed more of: the ability to lead by example.
They’re already making their presence felt, too.
Baltimore Ravens are feeling the impact of Trey Hendrickson and Calais Campbell
The Ravens already had several leaders on defense. Guys like Roquan Smith and Kyle Hamilton were named team captains for a reason. However, they needed another louder voice or two, particularly on the defensive line.
After a 2025 season where the team tallied just 30 sacks, Baltimore needed talented voices like Trey Hendrickson and Calais Campbell to get them back on the right track in 2026. The lack of pressure up front was the leading cause of the defense’s slumber; the veteran duo can not just boost the production, but can help the younger guys develop.
The defensive line has numerous young players eager to grow. Mike Green, Zion Young, Ethan Burke, and Aeneas Peebles could all benefit from Hendrickson and Campbell’s presence. Even fifth-year pro Travis Jones could keep taking steps toward an All-Pro and Pro Bowl-level under their guidance.
And Ravens players are quickly feeling that leadership.
Following Wednesday’s practice, defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver spoke about what he’s seen from Hendrickson.
“Since the moment he’s stepped foot into this building, he’s just been working,” Weaver said. “I’m so amazed at not only the quality of his work, but the level of detail involved in his film study…He is a masters level teacher when it comes to pass rush.”
When you talk about leading by example, that’s exactly the player Hendrickson sounds like he is becoming for the Ravens.
As for Campbell, he’s gotten praise from almost every direction this offseason for his willingness to pass down his wealth of knowledge. Tavius Robinson was the most recent player to offer a glowing review about Campbell’s character.
“Calais is the ultimate leader,” Robinson said. “Being 40 years old and still playing this game at the level he’s playing at is amazing…I would be wrong to not learn and be a sponge to get as much information as I can get from him. He’s been great.”
Clearly, it doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or seasoned veteran at this point. You still have a lot to learn from a player like Campbell. 18 years in the NFL is an absolute grind.
With Hendrickson and Campbell occupying the defensive line now, Baltimore’s defense looks scary. The depth is much stronger, and with a new coaching staff, it’s a unit that could take off in 2026.
