Ravens' offseason trending toward an aggressive $27 million vote of confidence

It sure seems like the Ravens will pick up Zay Flowers' fifth-year option.

The Baltimore Ravens have several crucial decisions ahead of them this offseason. One of the biggest decisions is what to do with Pro Bowl wide receiver Zay Flowers. The 25-year-old receiver can earn just over $27 million for the 2027 season if the Ravens pick up his fifth-year option before May 1.

If the Ravens decline Flowers' fifth-year option, then they'd ideally work out an extension with him. Regardless, as Baltimore just saw with Tyler Linderbaum, agreeing to an extension isn't easy, and you run the eventual risk of losing the player in free agency for nothing.

Based on reporting from ESPN's Dan Graziano, it seems likely that the Ravens will pick up Flowers' fifth-year option.

"I got the impression from my conversations that the Ravens plan to pick up the fifth-year option on 2023 first-round pick , and that will put him in line to earn $27.298 million in 2027 after making $2.664 million in 2026," Graziano wrote.

Picking up Zay Flowers' fifth-year option is a bold yet wise move

While this certainly does seem like a high price for Zay, picking up his fifth-year option is ultimately the best option for the franchise, given the risks of losing him in free agency down the road. Plus, even if they agree to an extension with Flowers this offseason, it's fair to expect that it would be within the same general ballpark.

Flowers is coming off a terrific season where he racked up 1,211 yards -- which is the most ever by a Ravens WR and the seventh most in the league. With this fifth-year option, Flowers would be one of the league's 15 highest-paid receivers. Sure, he still has some room to grow, especially in terms of ball security, but Flowers' production and versatility skill set make him worth this price.

Under Declan Doyle's new system, explosive plays will be a priority. As such, it's fair to expect Flowers to take another step next season. Furthermore, the Ravens would be wise to prioritize Lamar Jackson's favorite target as a long-term part of their core as they lean into their passing game.

The changes to the coaching staff indicate an aggressive direction for the Ravens this offseason, and there's no reason for this mindset not to carry over to player-related decisions. Baltimore is clearly doing whatever it takes to win a Super Bowl, and retaining Flowers should absolutely be a part of this.

Given the high price point, there's some level of apprehension among Ravens fans. Nevertheless, I think this decision will end up benefiting the Ravens in a big way.
