The Baltimore Ravens almost always draft well. Whether it be star-level talent at the top of the draft or finding depth in the middle to late rounds, they know how to build a successful roster. It feels like their 2026 NFL Draft will be no different.
Obviously, the headliner of Baltimore’s class is without a doubt first-rounder Vega Ioane. He should be an immediate game-changer. However, there’s a second-round pick who could have just as big a role, if not somehow a bigger one.
Zion Young has been a highly-touted rookie this offseason, and in a recent article for NFL Mocks, Tarringo Basile-Vaughan called the Missouri product as Baltimore’s most important rookie in 2026. Basile-Vaughan wrote:
“If Green makes a Year 2 leap and emerges as a consistent pass rush presence, Young could give the Ravens an intriguing edge rotation if his talent translates immediately to the NFL. Although the Ravens have other draft picks who will play important roles, the addition of Young could help elevate the defensive front seven back into one of the more fearsome units in the division.”
Zion Young might quickly play a game-changing role on the Baltimore Ravens’ defense
What might separate Zion Young as the Ravens’ most important rookie is seeing how unbelievably abysmal the pass rush was last year. It was as close to nonexistent as it gets. And while the Trey Hendrickson signing should help fix that, Young could be an absolute necessity this year.
Young might be a bit lackluster as a pass rusher at this point in time. He had a very underwhelming 11.5 sacks across four collegiate seasons, but as a run defender, he’s almost unstoppable. The 22-year-old could be a plug-and-play run defender, and with him being incredibly stout in that area, he could help pass-rush specialists like Hendrickson and Mike Green play to the best of their abilities.
For Jesse Minter’s defense, Young and Tavius Robinson will likely be the best edge-setting options. Both Hendrickson and Green can struggle against the run, but with the addition of Young, there’s a strong duo who can absolutely wreck the game in both areas now. It truly builds an excellent rotation.
And when you talk about Young, you can’t ignore his relentlessness. He’s as fierce as anyone on the football field, bringing the firepower and mindset to intimidate any offensive lineman lining up across from him. That in itself will allow him to make his mark, even if he isn’t able to stuff the stat sheet out of the gates.
Of course, Vega Ioane seems to be the most talented player in Baltimore’s draft class, and possibly one of the top guys in the entire class, but in terms of need and the ways a player can make their presence felt, it’s hard to disagree with Young being the team's most important rookie. He brings the type of edge that the Ravens have missed on defense, and hopefully, it shines through early and often.
