The intensity in Baltimore Ravens training camp is in full swing, and while that’s exciting, injuries always offer people a brutal reminder of football’s rugged nature.
At linebacker, that reality is unfortunately setting in—Teddye Buchanan is on the PUP list, and Carl Jones has been missing practices. With that spot looking thin at camp, the team had to address it. They responded in a full-circle way by signing Jamon Johnson on Friday.
This will be a familiar spot for Johnson. He played his high school ball at St. Frances Academy, where his talent was obvious to everyone in the area and he became a four-star recruit. Now, he returns to where it all started: Charm City.

Jamon Johnson is obviously just a depth signing. To be honest, he isn’t a roster spot-demanding player by any means either. He was waived by the Green Bay Packers back in April, and wasn’t signed until August 7 for a reason.
Still, Johnson has a role to play right now. Teddye Buchanan, despite making a very impressive recovery up to this point, is still probably a few weeks away, whereas with Carl Jones, we really don’t know the extent of his injury. Johnson is here to ensure that Baltimore can manage the injuries while giving veterans like Roquan Smith the rest they need ahead of the regular season.
Even then, I don’t think it’d be crazy to say that Johnson can make a run for the practice squad. He has that winning DNA, playing a part in Georgia’s back-to-back National Championships in 2021 and 2022, and made Green Bay’s practice squad in his rookie campaign. He also appeared in two games in 2025, totaling 10 combined tackles and one pass deflection.
Those brief showings in his rookie season with the Packers had some flashes, too. According to Pro Football Focus, Johnson finished with a 79.1 run defense grade. That was his bread and butter in college, and clearly, it’s shown at least some sign of translating to the pros.
Johnson may only be an available body being brought in while Baltimore waits for others to get healthy. However, if he earns a fair share of reps in camp and preseason, he could find himself taking one of those coveted spots on the practice squad.
It’s a serious uphill climb to get to that point; Jones and undrafted rookies Reid Williford and Dominic DeLuca are fighting hard to achieve the same fate. It’s fair to say Johnson has a puncher’s chance, though.
