The Baltimore Ravens’ wide receiver room is loaded with many unknowns. Zay Flowers is the only sure thing. Behind him, there’s potential everywhere you look.
At their best, the wide receivers could be a deep, talented group. At their worst, though, it could be a repeat of 2025. The Ravens desperately need some of their young guys to turn a corner.
And while Ja’Kobi Lane, Devontez Walker, and Elijah Sarratt have rightfully gotten most of the attention, there’s another young target gunning for reps. LaJohntay Wester is doing everything right this summer.
Coming off a very strong preseason, Wester is gaining momentum. It’s definitely not going to result in the WR3 job or even the WR4 spot, but he’s made his mark in offensive coordinator Declan Doyle’s mind. If you want explosive plays, Wester could be an electric option to bring those.
LaJohntay Wester is becoming a hard option for Baltimore Ravens’ offense to ignore
LaJohntay Wester will have a role in Baltimore. He’ll return punts for the second straight year, and with his speed and explosiveness, it feels like he’s good for 10 to 15 yards every return.
If a former sixth-round pick wants to earn a role on offense, special teams is exactly how you do it. Wester is showing the kind of playmaking ability that demands at least a handful of reps at wideout.
Wester is trending in the right direction, too. Following practice on Wednesday, he spoke about his development entering year two.
“I think I’ve grown a lot,” Wester said. “Learning from Zay, learning from Bate, my older guys in the room. Just taking advantage of my opportunity.”
And he’s truly taking advantage of those opportunities. The Colorado product showed exactly what he can do when those offensive snaps are given to him in preseason. He was one of the primary focuses of the passing offense.
He tallied 7 receptions, 45 yards, and 2 touchdowns through those three weeks of action. Sure, he was more of a short-yardage guy, but he proved he can get going after the catch, move the chains, and find the end zone. That’s encouraging production from a player who was absolutely lethal in college.
Realistically, if Zay Flowers ever needs a breather, Wester could come in and fill that jittery slot receiver role. Obviously he can’t hold a candle to Flowers, but he really looks like he could get the job done in some capacity.
Wester has also received praise from his teammates and former teammates this past offseason. Most notably, DeAndre Hopkins mentioned that people are sleeping on Wester.
When you’re getting the seal of approval from a future Hall of Famer, you’re doing something right.
We’ll have to wait to see how high Wester flies in 2026. He’s buried in the wide receiver room, but it’s certainly one he could climb out of if he keeps making plays.
