The Baltimore Ravens’ offensive line is still running on fumes. However, there’s a new glimmer of hope emerging at one spot. After being acquired on October 7, Cam Jurgens finally made his team debut in Week 7. And while most of the offense and defense sputtered, Jurgens offered hope.

It wasn’t a terrific outing. Like the rest of the offensive front, Jurgens failed to create much space for Derrick Henry and Justice Hill in the run game. The rushing attack had very little space to do work, as Henry and Hill were often hit in the backfield.

In the passing game, though, he played to near perfection.

40 pass-blocking snaps. 1 pressure. A 2.5% pressure rate allowed.

That’ll play against the Cincinnati Bengals and star Dexter Lawrence II.

Baltimore Ravens’ offensive line is getting a much-needed boost from Cam Jurgens

The interior needed Cam Jurgens’ help. The Ravens were running Vega Ioane out at center, Emery Jones Jr. at right guard, and John Simpson at left guard, and although Ioane did a great job in the middle, Jones and Simpson have been horrendous.

Jurgens’ Baltimore debut allowed Ioane to move back to right guard. Excluding Simpson, four of the five starters- Jurgens, Ioane, Ronnie Stanley, and Roger Rosengarten can provide average-to-above-average play. That’s way better than what this team had over the last couple of years.

Now, with Ioane down with an MCL sprain, Jurgens becomes much more crucial. For however many games Ioane’s out, Andrew Vorhees or Jones will start by Jurgens’ right shoulder. Everyone knows Vorhees and Jones aren’t enough; Jurgens’ quality of play needs to be amplified, especially with Lamar Jackson nearing his return from a high ankle sprain.

If Jurgens can keep replicating that level of pass protection, he’ll be exactly what Jackson has been desperate for, too.

The pass-blocking last year was dead. Tyler Linderbaum did about as well as he could with Daniel Faalele and Vorhees starting alongside him, and it wasn’t enough. The interior was a complete disaster, and the Ravens knew they couldn’t run that back.

They replaced Faalele with Ioane, who already looks like a rising star. On the other side, Simpson takes over for Vorhees, and despite him looking like a disastrous signing, I guess he’s still an improvement. After losing Tyler Linderbaum and signing three centers, who are now injured, Jurgens might be a game-changing puzzle piece.

Obviously, the 27-year-old must pick up the slack in the run game — it’s Baltimore’s bread and butter. To put it bluntly, his play there wasn’t even close to where it needs to be.

Still, Jurgens’ pass-blocking in the Week 7 loss offered a silver lining. He held his own against one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles, Dexter Lawrence II. It was certainly an encouraging start to his career in Charm City.
