The Baltimore Ravens could soon have a key piece joining their offensive line. After trading for Cam Jurgens, the fifth-year pro is making progress in his return from a concussion. But that doesn’t guarantee a start in Week 6.
Jurgens self-reported concussion symptoms last Monday and has yet to log a full practice. On Wednesday, he was limited and wore a red non-contact jersey as he continued to work through concussion protocol.
Jesse Minter also provided an update that didn’t guarantee Jurgens’ availability.
“There’s just things within the [concussion] protocol that you have to clear,” Minter said. “He’s put himself in a really good position. We’ll make sure that all the medical stuff goes the way we want it to go, and if it does, he’ll be ready. If not, then we’ll be ready to play without him. It’s one of those situations where the medical side will really determine his availability.”
While excitement is building around Jurgens’ eventual Ravens debut, his status for Sunday remains up in the air.
Cam Jurgens is nearing the finish line, but Baltimore Ravens must keep options open
This news is obviously encouraging progress for Cam Jurgens. It’s way better than the three straight days of no practice ahead of Week 5. Evidently, he’s nearing the finish line; the last hurdle is to clear concussion protocol.
If Jurgens does that, the Ravens have themselves an actual center — one who’s comfortable at the position and communicating up front. Credit where credit is due, Vega Ioane has excelled there, but moving him back to guard and slotting Jurgens in at center would bring a huge boost to the offensive line.
Sure, Jurgens has struggled in 2025. He was abysmal starting at guard for the Philadelphia Eagles. Still, the hope is that moving him back to his natural center spot will help him return to being an above-average starter.
Baltimore needs a backup plan, though. Concussion protocol isn’t easy to clear — the NFL rightfully takes it incredibly seriously, and players must pass a five-step process before fully practicing again.
These injuries are also impossible to predict. Symptoms can emerge at any time throughout the recovery, and you can’t simply rush back onto the field. The only way back is rest and proper medical clearance.
With that in mind, the Ravens will have to keep the Vega Ioane option open. It’s worked well for two games, and there may be a realm where Ioane makes a third start at center. At this point, though, no one’s questioning if he can do it.
In fact, people are starting to expect greatness from him. He’s been so good that he’s getting hype in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race.
If Baltimore needs to put that guy back at center, he’ll be willing and able to do that, and he’ll crush it.
Ideally, though, it’s Cam Jurgens out there in the middle of the offensive line against the Cleveland Browns. But until he clears concussion protocol, the Ravens need to be prepared for either outcome.
