The Baltimore Ravens’ trade for Cam Jurgens has sparked plenty of debate. Did the Ravens fill an overwhelming need at center? Yes. Did they also give up a ton for a struggling player like Jurgens? Quite possibly.
No matter where you stand, you have to admit this deal was a move Baltimore had to make. They couldn’t roll out Vega Ioane at center for much longer — they needed him back at guard and an actual center calling the shots up front to protect Lamar Jackson.
Jurgens is currently in concussion protocol and won’t play in the Ravens’ Week 5 matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. Come time for Week 6, though, Jurgens is expected to take the field in the purple and black.
Baltimore Ravens make must-have trade by acquiring Cam Jurgens
Cam Jurgens’ arrival adds a sense of certainty to Baltimore’s offensive line. It’s already been extremely leaky, and losing Danny Pinter, Jovaughn Gwyn, and Ethan Pocic to long-term IR stints made fans question everything a lot more.
Sure, Vega Ioane was solid in his center debut, and Jurgens has sucked at guard in 2026, but at center, Jurgens should be an upgrade. Jurgens’ play should see a jump; however, more than anything, it’s that comfort and ability to communicate in the middle of the offensive front that was needed.
That’s what Jurgens can bring. He has all the experience you need with 31 collegiate starts at center at Nebraska and 45 at that spot in the NFL. With all the uncertainty, Jurgens has shown the ability to hold things down at center.
He’s also learned from a couple of the greatest to ever do it. He was hand-picked by a future Hall of Famer, Jason Kelce, and learned from him in 2022 and 2023. And on the coaching staff, offensive line guru Jeff Stoutland coached him from 2022 to 2025. There aren’t many better voices to have in your ear as a young buck.
As Jurgens looks to make the transition back to center, he should be what the Ravens need.
Ravens’ trade grade in Cam Jurgens deal: B-
The trade is…fine. Baltimore desperately needed a center, especially after Lamar Jackson went down with an ankle injury, and they found one in Cam Jurgens. When he’s fully healthy and at center, Jurgens has proven he can be an above-average contributor. Heck, he’s shown signs of being a top-10 center in the past.
Still, you can’t overlook his flaws. His 2026 campaign hasn’t just been bad. It’s been absolutely embarrassing to watch. I get it, he’s been out of position, but when his blocking has been that bad, it’s fair to question his ability.
And it’s even fairer to question the trade package. They gave up not just a 2027 fifth-round selection, but a real heavy hitter in their 2028 second-round pick. Yes, that second-rounder is a year out of the picture, but if Jurgens can’t rebound, things could look really bad.
Hopefully he can turn things around because it would be a huge jolt for this 2026 roster. More importantly, though, it could give the Ravens their next franchise center. Jurgens is under a favorable contract through the 2029 campaign. That’s the kicker that drove up the price, and it makes the trade’s ceiling captivating for Baltimore.
Ultimately, it’s a massively high-risk, high-reward deal. Right now, it doesn’t seem entirely worth it. However, if things play out to their best-case scenario, the Ravens will have one less roster hole to worry about for the next few years.
