The Baltimore Ravens added to an already very strong secondary, choosing to bring over oft-injured former Green Bay Packers Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander. The move has to shake up the contenders in the AFC, especially if teams believe the Ravens can keep Alexander healthy.
While Alexander will join a loaded group that includes All-Pro Kyle Hamilton, emerging star Nate Wiggins, and veteran Marlon Humphrey, the Houston Texans decided to dig exceedingly deep into their pool of available free agent players to beef up their secondary.
The Texans are expected to agree to terms with former first-round pick Damon Arnette, who played in just 13 games before his off-field behavior led to his release. Arnette's last experience in the pros was playing with the Houston Roughnecks of the UFL, which is a far cry from competing for Pro Bowls with the Packers.
Houston's response to Baltimore making a needle-moving signing is to bring in someone with a longer "legal issues" page on Wikipedia than the story of his professional career. Meanwhile, the Ravens can sleep tight knowing their roster is much deeper than what Houston is bringing to the table.
Ravens can laugh at Texans' Damon Arnette signing after Jaire Alexander move
Arnette's play on the field was horrendous. Overdrafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders, Arnette's name became synonymous with burnt toast. His play off the field is what made him a toxic asset that few teams in the league were willing to touch.
Since entering the NFL, Arnette has been seen flashing a gun on social media while making threats, pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon, and driving with a suspended license. Arnette was also arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine in 2024.
The Texans' secondary is good enough to where they don't need Arnette to play that much, but it to quite amusing that Houston's response to a team that has consistently beat them down in their quest to make some noise in the AFC is to bring in a UFL player who hasn't suited up in the NFL since Davis Mills was their franchise starter.
The Ravens are equipped to go on the hunt for a Super Bowl, all while the Texans slowly flake away and watch their best-laid plans go up in smoke as some of the other contenders continue to improve around them. Arnette is not going to help them improve upon the 31-2 scoreline.
