The Baltimore Ravens knew coming into Week 3 that they would have some problems replacing defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike. The two-time Pro Bowler missed Monday night’s game with a neck injury, and his absence could not have been more obvious after just one half.

Baltimore could not stop Detroit’s potent offense in the early going. In their opening drive, quarterback Jared Goff did whatever he wanted through the air. He had a clean pocket in the team’s first possession, slinging the rock for multiple splash plays, including 24-yard and 19-yard completions to wide receiver Jameson Williams.

Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr has attempted to send defensive backs and linebackers to make Goff uncomfortable, but even those blitzes have proven ineffective. There was little to no pressure, and while they clogged lanes against the run early, they clearly ran out of gas later on.

Madubuike was also missed in the run game. In the Lions’ final scoring drive of the first half, they ran the ball 13 times and took over 10 minutes off the clock. Running back David Montgomery had his chance to shine, as he was the lead catalyst in the team’s 98-yard drive, ultimately finding paydirt.

Baltimore made adjustments on Detroit’s next drive, but they still desperately need Madubuike.

The Lions finished the first two quarters with 116 passing yards and 57 rushing yards. They also won the time of possession battle by almost 10 minutes.

If Madubuike’s neck issue keeps him out any longer, Baltimore could have a serious issue. They will likely handle this situation with extra precaution due to the severity of neck problems. With no updates from Head Coach John Harbaugh regarding his health, they could also lose him for their Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Nose tackle Travis Jones has made his name known as one of the league’s best run defenders, but he is a one-man army right now. Broderick Washington Jr. has not been the player the Ravens thought they had when they signed him to an extension in 2023, and rookie Aeneas Peebles has some serious development to do as a run defender if he wants to become an every-down player.

Baltimore hopes to get Madubuike back soon, but concerns remain. If his neck injury requires an injured reserve stint, the team may need to search the trade market for a replacement.
