Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Devontez Walker quickly became a fan favorite last season. Despite being targeted just eight times, Walker remarkably reeled in three touchdowns. Frankly, it was frustrating to watch him be glued to the sidelines under John Harbaugh, given his flashes of brilliance. With a new coaching staff, though, it was easy to talk yourself into Walker having a breakout season (I certainly bought into this idea)
However, rookie wide receiver Ja'Kobi Lane has been the star of the Ravens' training camp so far. Seemingly every day, videos surface of Lane making a spectacular catch. ESPN's Jamison Hensley even noted that Lane is the most impressive rookie he's seen in his 27 years of covering the team.

Without a doubt, Lane being ahead of schedule changes the complexion of the Ravens' wide receiver room, and one adverse effect is that he will limit Walker's opportunities. To be clear, this is a great "problem" for the Ravens to have, who have long lacked WRs.
Regardless, fans who were hopeful to see Walker earn a notable role in the offense might have to wait. And you have to feel a bit bad for Walker, who is suddenly feeling like the forgotten receiver again.

Heading into training camp, it felt like a realistic possibility that Walker would be Baltimore's WR3 behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. With a strong training camp, Walker might have even been able to jump Bateman. In addition to Lane's electric training camp, Bateman has shown signs that he's ready to bounce back.
As such, Walker is now slotted as the WR4. And if Elijah Sarratt shines, Walker could be even further down the depth chart.
I still expect Walker to have somewhat of an increased role. It's a pretty low bar after last season, to be fair. Nevertheless, a true breakout season looks to be on hold for now, and unfortunately, Walker feels destined to spend a lot of time watching from the sidelines again.
Walker still has some upside, and he hasn't performed poorly in training camp by any means. He is capable of making explosive plays, and if given an opportunity, he could thrive. At this moment, though, it's hard to justify truly unleashing Walker.
With how well Lane has performed, the Ravens absolutely need to prioritize getting him snaps. Beyond him being simply unguardable in camp, he fills a clear need as a big-bodied receiver and red-zone monster. Bateman's contract and solid play warrant him getting another chance.
Unfortunately, in terms of earning a sizable role in the offense, Walker is currently the odd man out. Things can always change, but for now, it sure seems like Walker isn't going to have the breakout season that he previously felt primed for.
