The Baltimore Ravens caught everyone’s attention with their decision to bring in Diego Pavia for their rookie minicamp this upcoming weekend. Not long after, they signed him to a contract that will give him a spot on the offseason roster.

Pavia was a polarizing prospect. He became the first Heisman finalist since 2014 to go undrafted, but following the 2026 NFL Draft, he jumped at the opportunity to show his worth in Baltimore. It’s a great landing spot for him. He’ll have a shot at the third-string quarterback job with the Ravens.

On Good Morning Football on Wednesday, head coach Jesse Minter offered a peek behind the curtain surrounding their interest in Pavia. He had a great review of the 24-year-old.

“[Pavia] is a force multiplier at Vanderbilt…This guy made everyone in the building better,” Minter said. “He’s one of the first people in, he’s one of the last to leave, he’s a really hard worker. We’ll certainly have some talks about how to handle certain things a little bit better…Any rookie undrafted free agent, come in and work, let what you do on the field, and by your actions, show who you really are.”

Baltimore Ravens and Jesse Minter make intrigue surrounding Diego Pavia clear

As the Ravens shift to a new era under Minter and the rest of the coaching staff, they’re doing everything in their power to ensure that “Play like a Raven” sticks around. Minter has mentioned that there’s a new way to do things, but that mentality is something that should remain a staple.

Even in recent years under John Harbaugh, though, it felt like Baltimore kind of strayed away from that Ravens type of competitiveness.  It likely played a role in Harbaugh’s firing, and just as it’s refreshing to see the new coaching staff come in and change things, it’s refreshing to see them reinforce the long-time culture that the team’s been associated with. The Pavia signing is a clear emphasis on that.

Although it’s just the offseason, everyone knows Pavia is going to come in and give 110%. His competitive drive is second to none. Bringing that to minicamp should be great for the rest of Baltimore’s incoming rookie class, too, as the team needs to implement that culture in the newcomers. Sure, Pavia's also a rookie, but he knows how to command a huddle and does so in an emphatic way. That’s exactly why Minter is excited to have him.

It also helps that Pavia has the obvious backing of his head coach at Vanderbilt, Clark Lea. Minter worked under Lea as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach in 2021. That trusted relationship definitely played a role in the Ravens signing Pavia, and with all the concerns surrounding his attitude and character, it helps that Minter and company know what they’re getting into.

Overall, Pavia may not make much of an impact in Charm City, but he’ll be gunning for the QB3 role. He is also going to come with a fire lit under him. Is his personality polarizing? Yes. But does Minter love that attitude on the field? Clearly, he does.
