Khalil Mack's injury update signals trouble for Ravens' offense
By Matt Sidney
The Baltimore Ravens head into tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers with plenty to focus on. But, Khalil Mack might be the biggest problem of all. The veteran edge rusher, officially listed as questionable with a groin injury, is pushing to play after missing last week’s game against the Bengals.
If Mack does return, it could mean serious trouble for Baltimore’s offense, which already has a few questions to answer heading into this one itself.
Khalil Mack isn't a name to be overlooked. He’s one of the most dominant pass rushers of the past decade. With 106 career sacks, a Defensive Player of the Year award, and a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s, Mack has built a reputation for ruining offensive game plans.
Khalil Mack expects to play tonight for Ravens vs Chargers on MNF
Even this season, while not at his peak production, he’s shown he can still be productive. His 4.5 sacks in nine games don’t tell the full story of how disruptive he’s been, especially when paired with Joey Bosa on the Chargers’ defensive front. Together, they create a tandem capable of putting any quarterback under constant duress.
Mack’s history against Baltimore is no less intimidating.
In his four career games, he has recorded three sacks, including two sacks in last year’s 20-10 win by the Ravens in Baltimore. Additionally, since he was reportedly close to playing last week and has had extra time to rest and prepare, the Ravens should expect him to be on the field and ready to contribute.
The timing of Mack’s potential return couldn’t be worse for Baltimore’s offense. Center Tyler Linderbaum is questionable with a back injury, and while he wouldn’t be tasked with blocking Mack one-on-one, the offensive line struggles have been real. Look for Mack to take advantage of any cracks in the foundation. Tackles Ronnie Stanley and rookie Roger Rosengarten will bear the brunt of the pressure, as the Chargers will likely move Mack around to find favorable matchups.
When asked if he was playing this weekend, Mack didn't mince his words. He said, "I'm not practicing for nothing." Strong words from a strong man.
Against the Pittsburgh Steelers, we saw what an elite defense can do to neutralize the Ravens' offense. In that game, Baltimore struggled, committing 12 penalties, six on offense. The lack of discipline shined brightly throughout the game. Frankly, it's been a problem for this team all year. Players like Mack study and see where the weak spots are, and then they attack.
If Mack is back at full strength, Baltimore’s ability to execute will be tested early and often.
