The NFL offseason is already very busy for some teams. While there are still teams battling for the Lombardi Trophy, others, like the Baltimore Ravens, are already focusing on their offseason priorities. That includes their search for a new head coach after firing John Harbaugh.
The coaching cycle is a wild one. As of January 13, there are nine head coaching vacancies, and there could be a few more to come. There are also a ton of coordinator positions left open, and the Los Angeles Chargers are the latest franchise making a change on that front, firing a name that Ravens fans are very familiar with.
The Chargers fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Tuesday. The decision comes two days after a complete offensive disaster in the team’s Wild Card matchup against the New England Patriots. Los Angeles scored just six points and only tallied 207 total yards.

While that performance was severely underwhelming, fans who watched the Ravens during the Greg Roman era on offense will tell you that primetime blowup was entirely predictable.
Ravens’ warnings proven right by Greg Roman firing
Roman knows how to coach an offense…in the regular season. Since his days with the San Francisco 49ers, he’s led some high-powered offenses in regular season action, especially when it comes to the running game.
In Baltimore, Roman’s rushing attack ranked in the top three of the NFL in every year under his leadership from 2019 to 2022. With the Chargers, that shifted a bit with Justin Herbert under center, but they remained a decent offense over his two years there. Like clockwork, that changed in the postseason.
It seems the moment always gets too bright for Roman when those playoff lights turn on. He outsmarts himself and goes away from his bread and butter, making his offense one-dimensional. His passing concepts are simply not complex enough to win consistently through the air. That was clear in Baltimore, and that was clear on Sunday night in the Chargers/Patriots primetime matchup.
Ravens fans could’ve told you exactly how Los Angeles’ season was going to unravel with Roman leading the offense. To many, it was a shock that he even got another offensive coordinator job, but that connection with the Harbaugh brothers likely played a part in that.
Whether it be in the pros or at Michigan, countless coaches have bounced around between John Harbaugh’s and Jim Harbaugh’s coaching staffs. Roman was with Jim in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014, and with John from 2019 to 2022. These past two years with Jim in Los Angeles clearly didn’t end how people were hoping, and his time as an offensive coordinator is likely up.
