The Baltimore Ravens might have just lucked into their best chance yet to land a true No. 1 wide receiver.

The New York Jets have officially released Davante Adams, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The six-time Pro Bowler is now one of the top free agents on the market, giving Baltimore an opportunity to add another elite weapon for Lamar Jackson without having to give up draft capital in a trade.

Baltimore has been in the mix for Adams before. There were rumors of interest last season when Adams was still with the Las Vegas Raiders, and the receiver himself fueled speculation with a cryptic Instagram post featuring Edgar Allan Poe—a blatantly obvious nod to the Ravens. But nothing materialized, and Adams was instead dealt to the Jets at the trade deadline. Now, Baltimore gets to go round two, and this time, they control their own destiny.

Davante Adams should play for the Ravens

The Ravens offense took a massive step forward last year, but the one thing it still lacked was a true X-receiver. Zay Flowers is a rising star, and Rashod Bateman finally showed signs of breaking out, but neither fills the role Adams could and would.

Adams, even at 32, remains one of the best route-runners in football. He put up 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in just 14 games last season, and that was for two dysfunctional offenses. His hands are as reliable as ever, and his ability to win in contested situations would give Lamar Jackson a go-to target in the biggest moments.

The best part about the potential signing is that the Ravens wouldn’t have to give up any assets to get him. Adams’ release means Baltimore can negotiate a contract on their terms, rather than trying to squeeze out a trade and put forth the best offer.

Of course, they won’t be alone in their pursuit. One has to assume that wherever Aaron Rodgers signs, there will be significant interest from Adams' camp. He is always following Rodgers around. However, Lamar Jackson is head over heels better than Rodgers is right now, so why settle for less when he doesn't have to? We think he should reconsider his allegiances and make the trek to the Charm City.

The Ravens have spent years looking for the final piece to their passing attack. Now, the answer is staring them right in the face. It’s time to go get Davante Adams.
