The Baltimore Ravens’ offseason program is in the books. We’ve learned a lot over the past month, as the new era has been introduced, and a very different coaching staff has had no problem making a quick statement.
The roster is also undergoing serious changes. Baltimore lost a ton of talent this offseason, but they’ve also gained a ton. As such, several notable battles have taken place during offseason activities and will continue into training camp.
One of those competitions is for the punter job. In all honesty, though, that might already be wrapped up. After Jordan Stout signed with the New York Giants in March, the Ravens have been searching for his replacement. 2025 undrafted free agent Luke Elzinga is a part of that search, but his short time in Charm City may already be up. He’s fallen far behind rookie sixth-round pick Ryan Eckley.
Baltimore Ravens roster hopeful’s fate might already be decided after minicamp
Understandably, Ryan Eckley is running away with the job. When Baltimore drafted him with their sixth-round selection, Luke Elzinga’s back was already pushed against the wall. Following minicamp, Eckley has been a standout. As for Elzinga, there’s been little to say about him.
In an article recapping the Ravens’ offseason program for BaltimoreRavens.com, Clifton Brown highlighted the ongoing battle for Baltimore’s punter job. It sounds like it’s Eckley’s job to lose. Brown wrote:
"“Sixth-round rookie punter Ryan Eckley impressed with his booming punts during mandatory minicamp. It's early, but Eckley's talent is obvious and he's not showing rookie jitters. Eckley has the early lead over Luke Elzinga in their battle to replace Pro Bowl punter Jordan Stout, who departed to the Giants.”"Clifton Brown, BaltimoreRavens.com
Elzinga pretty much needs a miracle. When the Ravens signed him back in April, it seemed like he actually had a fighter’s chance to win a spot on an NFL roster. After going undrafted in 2025, he saw limited opportunities with the Tennessee Titans at their rookie minicamp. Nothing ever came of that, but Baltimore was the perfect chance for him to find his footing. The team didn’t have a punter at the time, and the runway was his to impress. Not anymore.
Eckley has stolen the show thus far. From a clutch coffin corner punt at voluntary OTAs, to showcasing striking confidence, to his powerful leg, Eckley’s been impossible to miss.
Elzinga has also reportedly fallen short of Eckley in terms of hang time on their punts, and Eckley has also been the one holding for Tyler Loop on his kicks.
It’s not entirely fair to say Elzinga’s road in Baltimore has hit a dead end. At least not yet. Sure, an already tough path to a 53-man roster spot got even tougher through workouts, but Elzinga could still turn a corner.
Elzinga was reliable with his punt placement in college, and that’s likely why the Ravens are giving him a shot. However, his roster hopes might already be out of reach. We’ll have to wait and see if he can switch things up in training camp.
