Afterthought free agents Ravens should sign after NFL roster cuts
By Matt Sidney
The day after NFL teams pare down their rosters to 53 players is always filled with a mix of celebration and heartache. For the Baltimore Ravens, a team with Super Bowl dreams vivid in their sights, the final cuts bring them one step closer to locking in their championship-caliber squad. Yet, as the dust settles on these decisive moves, the reality of the day is twofold: while some players face the disappointment of being cut, others see it as a fresh opportunity to shine elsewhere.
This transitional period isn’t just significant for those who find themselves without a team; it’s also a strategic window for franchises like the Ravens to bolster their lineup. Free agents who didn’t make the cut elsewhere can often be the missing pieces a team needs to complete their Super Bowl puzzle. As teams around the league adjust their rosters, unexpected talents become available, presenting unique opportunities for teams ready to capitalize.
Among those on the market are notable players like C.J. Uzomah, David Bakhtiari, and Deion Jones, each of whom could bring valuable experience and skill to the Ravens. Uzomah’s versatility at tight end, Bakhtiari’s proven track record protecting the quarterback’s blind side, and Jones’ keen instincts as a linebacker make them compelling picks for any team aiming high this season.
As the Ravens refine their roster, signing such seasoned players could be the key to shoring up any perceived gaps. While the excitement of new additions builds, the reality is that in the fast-paced world of the NFL, today’s afterthought could be tomorrow’s game-changer.
Three afterthought free agents Ravens should sign after NFL roster cuts
C.J. Uzomah - TE
Initially, you might not think the Ravens need another tight end on the roster, as standout tight end Mark Andrews is already a phenomenal talent. However, it would be a good idea for the Ravens to consider adding another veteran tight end to complement Andrews. Imagine Andrews and Uzomah as the new dynamic tight end duo that brings a new dimension to the team.
The Ravens are known for their strong running game, and adding Derrick Henry to the backfield confirms this. Utilizing a two-tight end set would benefit both the running and passing games. Uzomah is a large player, listed at 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds. He has caught 192 passes for 1,881 yards and 16 touchdowns. While these numbers may not be exceptional, he offers more than just blocking. However, as previously mentioned, the Ravens focus on running the ball. A reliable starting tight end who excels at blocking could further enhance their running game.
David Bakhtiari - OT
It's no secret that the Ravens could use some help for their offensive line. Out are three starters from last season and in are... placement holders. Morgan Moses was a big loss at the tackle position. The Ravens haven't adequately addressed that position this offseason. That is, until now. Enter David Bakhtiari. Bakhtiari appeared on the The Adam Schefter Podcast in June and spoke about expectations:
"I am your cornerstone guy. Someone that's not only going to play in September but in December and into February and obviously hopefully for another couple of years."
- David Bakhtiari
A long-time starter for the Packers, he's currently one of the most intriguing linemen available. However, he has been limited to just 13 games over the past three seasons due to injuries. Despite this, he is a two-time first-team All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler and is eager to continue his career. He still views himself as a cornerstone player. And at age 32, Bakhtiari could be signed at a bargain as he seeks to reaffirm his reliability as a starter.
Deion Jones - LB
Deion Jones, a dynamic linebacker whose NFL career has been highlighted by consistent playmaking, was released by the Bills this Tuesday. Jones has accumulated 731 tackles, 13 interceptions, and 8.5 sacks throughout his career. Last season with the Panthers was particularly notable as he allowed an opposing passer rating of 43.9 in coverage.
Following the departure of Patrick Queen during this offseason, the Ravens could use some reinforcements at linebacker. They attempted to address this by selecting Adissa Isaac in the third round. However, adding a seasoned player like Jones could significantly strengthen their squad. Pairing Jones alongside Roquan Smith could replicate the successful dynamic previously seen with Queen, easing the pressure on Isaac to perform immediately and solidifying Baltimore’s defense as they aim for another playoff run.
