Where AFC North stars rank following a hit or miss Week 3 showing
By Matt Sidney
Another week, more weird results for the AFC North. This season has been the ultimate mixed bag of outcomes. The Pittsburgh Steelers remain undefeated, the Baltimore Ravens secured their first victory of the season, while the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals stunk.
Overall, this division is severely lacking direction. The stars have been very quiet early on this season, which is a bit uncharacteristic.

Passing leaders
Passing stats are down around the NFL, and the AFC North is not exempt from those numbers. The most impressive passing performance of the Week 3 slate belonged to Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow who slung the ball all over the Washington Commanders with 324 passing yards and three touchdowns.
For the rest of the division, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson continues to struggle, while Steelers quarterback Justin Fields is playing well enough to win games, but nothing more. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson continues to fly under the radar, but has been impressive this season.
Player | Passing yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Joe Burrow (CIN) | 746 | 5 |
Lamar Jackson (BAL) | 702 | 3 |
Deshaun Watson (CLE) | 551 | 3 |
Justin Fields (PIT) | 518 | 2 |
Rushing leaders
The ground game finally started to get some juice this week. Ravens running back Derrick Henry annihilated the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Henry ran the ball for 151 yards and added two rushing touchdowns for good measure. He was a massive reason why the Ravens secured their first win of the season.
The rest of the division continues to lag behind. Steelers running back Najee Harris put together a solid performance on the ground this past weekend, but he has yet to find the end zone. The Browns and Bengals host mediocre ground games at best.
Player | Rushing yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Derrick Henry (BAL) | 281 | 4 |
Najee Harris (PIT) | 209 | 0 |
Jerome Ford (CLE) | 145 | 1 |
Zack Moss (CIN) | 136 | 2 |
Receiving leaders
This might be one of the most underwhelming groups in the NFL. The AFC North, for some reason, just lacks that zest from the receivers. Now, we aren't going to sit here and blame quarterback play for the lack of receiving statistics, but it would also be hard not to.
Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase came back with a vengeance this week and honestly, the receiving throne will be his to lose this season. The connection he and Burrow had on Monday night was unreal. However, it still didn't result in winning football.
Player | Receiving yards | Touchdowns |
---|---|---|
Ja'Marr Chase (CIN) | 215 | 2 |
George Pickens (PIT) | 171 | 0 |
Zay Flowers (BAL) | 148 | 1 |
Jerry Jeudy (CLE) | 125 | 1 |
Sack leaders
It's a bit nuts to think Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy is leading the division in sacks through the first three games of the season, but he is. And he's only played in two games, and he might only have one eye - like we said: nuts.
Aside from Van Noy, it's the usual crew who lead their respective teams. Steelers defensive end T.J. Watt and Browns defensive end Myles Garrett continue to be unblockable. It's only a matter of time until the floodgates open and the defensive stars fully arrive, much to the chagrin of the opposing quarterbacks.
Player | Sacks |
---|---|
Kyle Van Noy (BAL) | 4.0 |
T.J. Watt (PIT) | 3.0 |
Trey Hendrickson (CIN) | 3.0 |
Myles Garrett, Za'Darius Smith (CLE) | 2.0 |
