The Baltimore Ravens made waves this offseason when they backed out of their deal with the Raiders to acquire Maxx Crosby and went on to sign Trey Hendrickson instead. Hendrickson gives the Ravens pass-rushing power they didn't have a season ago and it's exciting to think about what he can do with Jesse Minter as his head coach.
Other teams were in on Hendrickson, of course, and one team that we know was officially targeting him were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bucs GM Jason Licht appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday and talked about how close his team was to inking a deal with the pass-rushing phenom.
“Hendrickson being signed by the Ravens, we were in on that a little bit. Felt a little bit, you know, dejected at first, but now maybe it worked in our favor,” Licht said. “Not saying Rueben [Bain Jr.] is better than Hendrickson, I’m just saying now we’ve got our draft pick that we’re all excited about.”
Bucs GM says his team was "in on" Trey Hendrickson in free agency
It sounds like the Buccaneers might have been "in on" Hendrickson but he ultimately chose to sign with the Ravens. It's hilarious for Ravens fans because Hendrickson willingly chose to stay in the same division as his old team, the Bengals, where he spent the past five years.
Hendrickson was a third-round pick by the Saints in 2017, spent four years in New Orleans and then moved to Cincinnati in 2021. He had double-digit sacks every year he was with the Bengals except for one and even then, he had eight sacks in 15 games. Still nothing to sneeze at.
The hope is that Hendrickson, while 31 years old and set to turn 32 at the end of the year, still has some of that fire left in him and can give the Ravens the oomph they were missing on defense last year. Fortunately, he chose to sign with Baltimore and not the Buccaneers and hopefully the Ravens are rewarded for it.
