Before joining the Baltimore Ravens, free agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin was released by the Chiefs via voicemail

The NFL is a business, don’t let anyone tell you other wise. Just take the release of Jeremy MAclin for example.

Maclin just recently found a home with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this week, but it was not all happy go lucky. According to Pro Football Talk, the wide receiver found out he was being released via voicemail from general manager John Dorsey.

Here is an excerpt from the interview that Maclin had with PFT Live last Thursday:

"“Through a voicemail,” Maclin said. “[From G.M.] John Dorsey. I was upset, I was shocked. Apparently, they had been trying to trade me for two or three months. Which who knows if that’s true or not? I would just think that . . . a guy who is going into his ninth year would know if he’s being shopped or not. It is what it is. I still have respect for Big Red, still have respect for the organization. I’m not going to bad mouth anybody or talk any dirt on anybody. It was an unfortunate situation. They felt like they didn’t want me as a player anymore, so it is what it is. I’m happy with where I am right now, and I think that might be the last time I talk about what I call my former life. So I don’t think I want to talk about that anymore.”"

It’s good to see Maclin being the bigger person in this situation, but it’s still crappy nonethless. As a nine-year veteran, how would you. I’m not familiar with NFL front offices but you would think they would’ve had the dignity to tell him in person or actually talk to him on the phone. A voicemail just seems a little immature in this situation.

Poised for big year

I think Maclin now comes into Baltimore with a chip on his shoulder and I like that. The last thing you want is to be find out you are being released via voicemail, especially with a team you’ve spent the last two years with. He will be out to prove his former team that he’s more than worth the money he’s getting from the Ravens.

Even at the age of 29, Maclin has ton left in the tank. He enters an offensive with familiarity with Marty Morhinweg and should pick up on things rather quickly. I look for him to have a great season in 2017. He can beat defenders in a lot of different ways, whether it’s deep or in the short game. With the deep threats of Wallace and Perriman, we could see Maclin work out of the slot as well.

One team’s loss is another team’s gain and the Baltimore Ravens have got a great addition at wide receiver.
