The Baltimore Ravens are a pretty good bet to add at least one offensive lineman via the upcoming 2015 NFL Draft, and they recently chatted with another potential prospect – South Carolina guard A.J. Cann. The Ravens’ own offensive line coach, Juan Castillo, put Cann through some drills at USC’s pro day, as reported by the Baltimore Sun.

A projected second round pick, Cann was a four year starter at USC, where he logged 51 starts at left guard.  He recorded 30 reps on the bench press, a 32 1/2 inch vertical, and a 9-1 broad jump at his Pro Day workout.  In 2014, Cann was named first team All-SEC and second team All-American.

Cann is widely praised for his discipline, natural upper body strength, and powerful hands.  He is rarely penalized or bull rushed.  He has consistent hands and generates good push as a blocker as well as recognition in pass protection.  Cann showed great leadership during his tenure at USC.

On the flip side, Cann does have some technique flaws that must be addressed through coaching.  He needs to work on his ability to engage targets on the second level as well as his balance.  Cann tends to lean rather than aggressively punch out in pass pro.

Despite the flaws, A.J. Cann has the ability to improve.  He has the traits to be an instant starter at left guard in a power scheme.  With both Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele scheduled to hit free agency next year, Cann would be a good fit as a possible future replacement.
