Roughly a week into Baltimore Ravens training camp, quite a few players have stood out above the rest. But perhaps none have been as surprising as the performances of rookies Buck Allen and Darren Waller.
Allen has quietly been the most impressive rookie in camp so far, showing speed, natural pass catching ability, and nice moves in the open field. He could have a much bigger rookie campaign than most expect and is set up for success playing under Marc Trestman.
Darren Waller is an even bigger surprise, especially after many predicted he might not even wind up on the final roster. Expected to be a project at receiver, Waller has shown above average hands and better moves than anyone anticipated. He’s also proven to be a better route runner than anyone expected, making plays on slants and crosses routinely.
The battle for Matt Elam’s snaps rages on as well, as undrafted rookie Nick Perry fights with Brynden Trawick for scraps. Trawick saw some time with the ones and made several notable plays, but Perry continues to impress as well. This battle is going to go on for a few more weeks.
