Who will be the new punt/kick returner?

The Ravens certainly hoped that one of several candidates for the returner position would emerge by now.  But everyone that has taken a shot at the job has had their share of issues, and not one has really stood out over the other.

We got a little clarity following the first round of roster cuts as both Aldrick Robinson and DeAndre Carter received their pink slips.  So far this preseason, a grand total of 6 players have returned a punt or kick for the Ravens, including those two.  Here’s how they stack up so far.

More from Ravens News

Asa Jackson – 3 punt returns for 12 yards, 3 kick returns for 144 yards.

Michael Campanaro – 1 punt return for 10 yards.

Terrance Magee – 2 kick returns for 39 yards.

DeAndre Carter – 1 kick return for 8 yards.

Tom Nelson – 1 kick return for 24 yards.

Aldrick Robinson – 1 kick return for 26 yards.

Campanaro was the favorite before he suffered yet another nagging injury.  The Ravens simply can’t rely on the pint sized receiver to stay healthy at this point, but he should get another chance once he recovers from his current soft tissue injury.

Jackson’s usage suggests that he is the current favorite, but John Harbaugh refused to give him the verbal nod this week when asked.  His 103 yard return against the Redskins helped him a lot, but Jackson also fumbled.

Ultimately, I think the job comes down to those two, but Magee might have a shot as he is currently in the lead for the #3 running back job since Lorenzo Taliaferro is going to miss a few weeks.  Providing special teams value would enhance his roster chances as well.
