The former number one pick of the Houston Texans, was just released by the Buffalo Bills in an attempt to free up some cap space. Williams had has his ups and downs but has been a very reliable pass rusher for ten seasons in the NFL. Should the Baltimore Ravens be interested in Williams?

The answer is absolutely and unequivocally no. Williams does his best work as a 4-3 defensive end. The very reason for his struggles in Buffalo this past season was because he didn’t fit Rex Ryan’s defense. Williams is a hand in the dirt defensive end who is not as comfortable as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.

If you use Williams to his strengths he can still be a productive player. In 2014 he had 14.5 sacks and it was his third consecutive season with over 10 sacks. Williams had just 19 tackles and 5 sacks in his 2015 campaign with the Bills. While Dean Pees and Rex Ryan are very different defensive coaches, Williams would have the same problem in Baltimore. Williams would have to do the bulk of his work as an outside linebacker.

The Ravens pass rush problem needs a long-term solution any way. The Ravens are expecting Terrell Suggs to come back with a vengeance. Elvis Dumervil is one of the most able pass rushers in the NFL. The Ravens are always eager to add more fire power to their pass rushing arsenal, but they would rather find the next Suggs or Dumervil than add another player that is about the same age.

Williams may have been cut by the Bills but he could still be seen as a high value player at the right price. A team that runs a 4-3 defense could give him a decent amount of money. There is a premium on quality pass rushers in the NFL and the cost of Williams would probably be higher than the Ravens would be willing to pay any way.

The Ravens should not be interested in Mario Williams. He isn’t a fit for the Ravens. The Ravens are probably best suited to look for a pass rusher in the 2016 NFL Draft. In my latest mock draft, I have Noah Spence going to the Ravens with the sixth overall pick.
