According to a tweet by CBS reporter, Jason LaCanfora the Ravens are one of three teams interested by Eric Weddle in NFL Free Agency. Eric Weddle is one of the big name players still remaining on the market. The Ravens have had problems at the free safety position ever since they parted ways with the legendary Ed Reed. Weddle could provide the Ravens with much needed help in the back-end of their defense.

More from Ravens News

The Ravens have been busy freeing cap space. They restructured contracts and created cap space in every way imaginable. Their reputation of never being a big splash kind of team in the Free Agency has seemed like a trend the Ravens have been setting up to break. The question in the past couple of days hasn’t been if the always prudent Ravens were going to make a move, it has been what move will the team make?

Eric Weddle would be perhaps the most common sense move for the Ravens to make. If Weddle came to Baltimore he would be a massive upgrade at the free safety position. Ladarius Webb had been pegged for a move to free safety. Signing Weddle would give the Ravens a sure thing at this position rather than gambling on Webb’s ability to play the position he played in college, as a full-time starter.

Weddle would give the Ravens a clear leader in the secondary. You wouldn’t see blown coverage and confusion. You’d see the quarterback of the pass defense, communicating and directing his teammates. Weddle is a reliable deep safety who can make quarterbacks pay. He is a cerebral player, he is tough and strong as well.

The fact that the Steelers want him too would make his arrival that much sweeter in Baltimore. If the Ravens could get Weddle, they wouldn’t just be helping themselves but taking a free agent off the Steelers wish list.

At this point all we can do is hope. Weddle coming to Baltimore is still a long shot. It remains doubtful that the Ravens could win a bidding war at this point. If Weddle signed with the Ravens it would be because the team won him over. We’ll wait and see. We know the Ravens have interest, in the coming days we’ll see how badly they want to make this happen.
